Unemployment For Busted Entrepreneurs
Forbes ^ | 8-9-09 | Melanie Linder

If your business goes belly up, you might be entitled to some government funds.

Pink-slippers applying for unemployment insurance can hope to receive 30% to 60% of their salary from the past 12 to 18 months (up to their state's maximum allowance), and can collect that money for up to 26 weeks. But what about the safety net for busted small-business owners?

While each state runs its own unemployment benefit program (each with its own requirements and compensation schemes), there is one general rule of thumb for hard-luck entrepreneurs captured by July's unemployment figures, released Friday: If you pay unemployment taxes on your salary, and you're ready and able to work, you are likely eligible to collect unemployment insurance.

I hear all these " talking heads" the recession is over. Even on Fox News Sunday.

Is this a joke it is a war zone out there.

Empty buildings , houses no help wanted ads in Newspapers.

What industry is rocking besides Health Care?

Health care may be growing but reimbursements and are steadily ticking downward, and we ain’t ween nothin’ yet. A few segments have jumped into bed here with the devil but their reprieve will be short lived.

Question is, in which industry is the future bright? I don’t know.

I think the max unemployment in Florida is around $265 a week.

Can’t do much with that in Central Florida.

Well, it will probably be extended, and those of us working and/or creating jobs for others will subsidize it all.

Might as well work at a gas station. Probably make more.

Just remember, you actually get the full amount of your unemployment benefits, not the 50% left after taxes. $265 is pretty close to the after tax pay from an $10/hour job.

I hope so. In this economy it could take awhile to find work.

* Bill collections, unless “consumer rights advocates” kill it.
* Nursing assistants, because they will be the only medical category hiring
* Domestic skills teachers, for everything from sewing to canning, because people will not be able to pay others to do these things
* Handyman/repair man - new homes will be harder to build as environmentalists herd us into more cities, full rebuilds will be harder to get approved
* Plumber - toilets will always clog and septic tanks need to be pumped, and that will not change - probably more so as low flow toilets and showers get mandated
* Green power installers - even those who don’t care about environmentalism may be mandated to install wind/solar systems, and those seeking independence may seek the same help. And while the sellers may go out of business, those who install and maintain the products will still be needed

This is ridiculous, how many small biz owners have paid their “unemployment insurance”? Besides betcha if you tried the to pay it for yourself the “unemployment commission” folks wouldn't have a clue how to handle such and would look at you like you were nuts.

Actually, my wife & I briefly considered an ad for a "monkey sitter..."

( Yep, I am serious. )

Down the street in one direction, the county's first billion-dollar "condo conversion" is a field of weeds, surrounded by an earthwork to keep the rednecks, Negroes, and other undesirable peasants at bay. They're being sued by people who plunked multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars down to buy into Phase I, Phase II-- and haven't seen any actual buildings go up.

But the sales office is still open...

Go down the street in the other direction, and after you pass the county's biggest employer ( the Jail & Courthouse- yes, the problem is too much government... ) you will see what I have dubbed "The Towers of Silence," a reference to those curious structures the Parsees bury their dead in...

They've been chained for about a month now, the crews gone, the site broken in to... the excuse is they didn't get a building permit.

I'm thinking they used that as an escape from further expenditure on a white elephant.

Who wants to live in a tower you can only reach via elevator ( dependent on electricity ) and artificially heat & cool with prices skyrocketing?
