GM predicts 230 MPG for Volt

General Motors Co. predicted Tuesday that its Chevrolet Volt rechargeable electric car will get 230 miles per gallon of gas in city driving.

If confirmed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, which tests for mileage figures posted on new car stickers, the Volt would be the first car to exceed triple-digit gas mileage, a GM official said.

Toyota’s Prius, the most efficient car now sold in the U.S., gets 48 miles per gallon.

The Volt is powered by an electric motor and battery pack with a 40-mile range. After that, a small internal combustion engine kicks in to generate electricity for a range of up to of 300 miles. The battery pack can be recharged from a standard home outlet.

The downside is that the Volt is expected to cost nearly $40,000, nearly double the sticker price of some economy hybrids.

The Volt is scheduled to appear in showrooms in late 2010.

The EPA has already contradicted GM.

“Wow. Government motors didn’t take long to live up to it’s namesake and start with the BS.”

Exactly what I thought!

With no fear of the Government investigating their claims, they can say anything.

The 2nd generation Volt will do warp factor 2, create gasoline, and exhaust skittles.

No doubt that if I work 25 miles from home I will just plug into my employer-provided charging station while Im working.

Can it plow snow in Co? can it pull a mesquite stump in Tx?

Let government take care of the heavy stuff, they can get the money from the border fence fund and fire up the presses again.

The batteries in this car are no good below 32deg.
If the car is not plugged in it will automatically start it’s gas engine to warm the batteries up.

That should be good for a few laughs....

However, it’ll probably cost you $230.00 per recharge under Barry’s new Cap’n Tax scheme. But what the hell! You’ll be “saving the planet” for Algore while making HIM rich.

They are counting on people being so stupid that they believe electricity has no cost. The DBM has no intention of clearing up this misinformation. Just another media lie (attempt to deceive).

On local Detroit talk radio, they have had spoke people from GM on, talking about the Volt.

Never said what would happen to the range if the A/C or the heater were on?

Bet back when I had a job, wouldn’t make it on my 15 mile drive to work.

Amtrak is drawn by diesel-electric locomotives, not electric (at least where I come from)

If the Volt and other electrics get the acceptance hoped for we will be waiting nervously for the inevitable incremental improvement in battery technology. Then, where will we put 20,000,000 obsolete batteries, not to mention the 100 billion replacement price tag.

Sorry I forgot where I read it but the VOLT only gets that kind of mileage when it’s recharged six times on a trip. Not very honest.

So I could make my annual trip to see my family during the holidays (a 250 mile drive, each way), if I add a week of travel time each way (figuring overnight battery charges). Two weeks on the road, not counting the actual family visit.

Pass.

Is Government Motors seriously claiming that one gallon of gas will generate enough electricity to propel that car 270 miles?

Boy, GM told some whoppers before, but now that they're Government Motors there's no end to the lies they'll tell now! Next thing you know Government provided health care will be free!

Ok, we burn coal to produce the electricity that will give this car its tremendous mileage. Where is that figure?
