Utah told it can’t count missionaries in census

Bureau says there’s no way to reliably count those overseas in 2010

Aug 16, 2009

SALT LAKE CITY - The U.S. Census Bureau has told Utah's elected leaders it won't count Mormon missionaries serving overseas in the nation's next head count.

Census Bureau officials, rejecting Utah's lobbying efforts for the better part of a decade, say there's no way to reliably count the overseas missionaries.

Utah leaders say the omission cost the state an extra congressional seat in 2000, when the state fell just 857 people short of receiving the last available slot in the U.S. House.

The Census Bureau does count military and federal employees serving overseas, and Rob Bishop, R-Utah, says it should include Mormons on proselytizing missions.

"The bottom line should still be fairness and accuracy," Bishop said. "If we are currently counting some people abroad and not others, there is just no logic to that whatsoever."

An experiment in counting Americans abroad in 2004 turned into a "colossal failure," said Louis Kincannon, a former Census Bureau director under President Bill Clinton.

Few Americans responded to an outreach program in three sample countries — Mexico, France and Kuwait.

I got the long form which they will never figure out. I kept filling in the answer, crossing it out, drawing arrows to the real answer, crossing that out, drawing another arrow, etc. Only thing I answered without looking like a first grader did it was the first questions about how many lived in the house. The rest I would hate to have to figure out.

Yep, I got those LDS relatives and I’m Catholic.
Grandparents went from Catholic and Methodist to Unitarian.
I went to church as a kid at a lost of different denominations.

In the year 2000, Algore spearheaded an effort in Florida to disallow votes by military personnel voting from overseas. He said the envelopes lacked proof of date, i.e., postmarks. Military personnel serving in war zones can send mail to the U.S. which doesn’t require the normal post office processing - Gore tried to use this technicality since he assumed (probably rightly) that military personnel were heavily against him.

No matter what can or can’t be said of Mormon doctrines, not many can disagree that they are the premier record keepers outside of a few government agencies...and even that is debatable.

It is an absolutely safe bet that the Mormon Church has 99.9999% accurate centralized records of where every missionary is; where they are from; when they were sent; and when they are scheduled to return.

Yes- no doubt about it. Why they aren’t counted is mind-boggling.

Can’t we just “print” money?

Obama seems to have it down pat. Maybe that’s why we are out of office. :(
