There's been a big fuss this week because Michelle Obama wore shorts. She's worn shorts before - to walk the dog, do stuff around the White House. But the photos of her wearing them in that iconic descending-from-Air-Force-One-onto-the-tarmac setting proved too much for the media. Obamas? Check. Summer news doldrums? Check. Controversy? Close enough. It was a story.
And people reacted. The Today Show's poll on whether she should have shown that much thigh got one of the show's biggest responses ever, with 83% pro-shorts. Local papers found "experts" to discuss the implications of the shorts for the Obama White House, international papers analyzed what it said about American culture, the blogosphere took up every angle from what this said about the objectification of women to the taxonomy of the shorts: Hot pants? It is a lack of respect for the office and for the people. You can dress like a slob indoors, but when you are in the public, she should dress appropriately for the occasion.
I agree Hillary always looked like a clown... but at least she looked like a well dressed clown.

It'a all that high 'livin' off the hog' she's been doing. Like jetting over to London town to get her and the girls some fish and chips.

Maybe we should just drop the whole lady thing in her case, maybe “first wife” would be more fitting.

Michelle dressing down is part of a strategy to counterbalance her high end fashion look of the campaign and early first lady days. She needs to look like liberals not classy Republicans/conservatives. A poster should be made of Michelle as the joker too!

One of her 26 servants is carry those things, but has not disembarked yet. Tattoos are tastefully hidden in stratigic spots.
But if I'm playing a gig, I keep a change of nice, fresh clothes in my van, and I change before I arrive. She could dress frumpy on the plane for all I care, but what's wrong with changing into something appropriate and fixing her hair before she arrives? My wife would never dress like that for that situation. She looks like she's going fishing.
I'm saying I'm not advocating going back to grandma's standards (although there's an argument for it.) If someone wants to go to the supermarket in sweatpants, I don't care. But if you are in a formal situation---like being the First Lady---suck it up and wear appropriate attire.
I really do not want to look that closely...
