NH customers asked to cover tab for clunkers

Frustrated with delays, rejections and computer-system crashes, several New Hampshire auto dealers are making car buyers pledge to cover rebates if the federal government doesn't come through with checks under the Cash for Clunkers program.

Auto dealers say they are doing so because the federal government is a clunker when it comes to sending out rebate checks of $3,500 or $4,500 per car.

The New Hampshire Auto Dealers Association created the draft agreement earlier this month and sent it to members, said President Peter McNamara.

Some dealers aren't using the agreement. Others are negotiating the agreement into the deal. McNamara said dealers are having problems getting rebates from the federal government, despite a law that requires any rebate application to be answered within 10 days.

At Bonneville & Son in Manchester, the company has not received a single rebate, despite the 70 Cash for Clunker deals it signed since late July. Manchester Subaru has had one of 25 rebates approved.

For some dealers, the IOUs surpass $500,000, McNamara said. "For any dealer, $100,000 represents a serious cash-flow issue if you don't know when it's going to come in,"

As far as I can see, the media is presenting this program as a huge success. I must be missing something — as far as I can see, it’s an epic fail.

Government spokesman to MSM: "We blew thru the entire three billion in less than 2 weeks ... so successfully that we're canning the entire program immediately"

Doublespeak never sounded so good ... /sarc

This is the same government which, with all its demonstrated efficiency, intends to take over our medical care.

Oh, yes in deed.

Insufficient power in the hands of the Elitists in Washington DC. Need more.

And don’t forget what it will add to the deficit and the national debt.

I’m thinking that as car dealers become more aware of the ‘short-comings’ of the legislation it might push Washington to make these “economic benefits to the people” unfunded mandates that the States must pony-up (muck like Medicaid and a few others).

I fail to see what the entire point of this ridiculous 4 week long fiasco was.

I think that Obummer doesn't give a flying f___ if the dealers get paid or not. In fact, them not getting paid may be part of the plan. Gubmint Motors and Fiat/USA won't be hurt because the gubmint can just print money for them, but some private sector dealers may go under. Zero hates corporations, so that will be just fine by him.

Obozo wanted a bunch of poor people to get new cars, and they did. If they start defaulting on their loans, then watch Obama step in and use taxpayer $ to keep their cars from being repossessed.

My cynicism meter is WAY UP.

Notice how they DUPED the dealer into this debacle.

If they had told the consumer, go ahead and buy the car, we will send you a check, EVERYONE would be looking for a check.

As it is, they just ‘stick’ a few dealers and the masses remain untouched...Never mind it was YOUR MONEY to start with, it was just “Joe Six Pack” getting HIS from “Champagne Charlie”...

On Friday Gibbs categorically blamed the dealership’s “mistakes” for non-payment.

We all know that the government only hires the best of the best and they could NEVER make a mistake!

All dealers should have rejected this program which was placed on the backs of taxpayers. Didn’t they learn from the auto bailouts what happens when a company does business with Obama? He pulls the plug and assumes command.

These dealers get what they deserve. I have no empathy for them. Nor do I have any for those consumers who jumped on the bandwagon to get a better car deal. They did so with full knowledge it was the American taxpayer who held the burden to support the deal on their new car. But they didn’t care, nor did those dealers who participated in this taxpayer ripoff scam.

So yea, I hope those dealers and their customers suffer.

So the gov't. is subsidizing new car purchases with taxpayer dollars. Then they destroy the trade-in 'clunkers' for absolutely no return value to the taxpayers. On top of that now they are delinquent on reimbursing the auto dealers for their 'clunker' $$. FUBAR!

So now CAR BUYERS have to BAIL OUT the U.S. GOVERNMENT's BAD DEBT.

If I were China I'd be pretty scared about my investments.

I work in the auto parts business, well, I deliver parts to our commercial customers which are mom and pop mechanics, chain mechanics, used car dealers and even new car dealers. We took somewhat of a hit during this program but we are getting busy again. I did talk to a used car dealer who sells budget cars, good cars, for $2000 to $5000. He took a serious hit, only had one sale in 3 weeks.

Obama out to help the poor, give me a break! Most people I hang out with are working class just making it. I'm also of limited means. Those lower priced cars are the thing for my friends and myself. By destroying perfectly good cars, Obama has stuck his nose in the marketplace and taken a good number of these cars off the table, cars the poor people need and can buy. I'd rather see some of these cars even go to vets, battered women and so on instead of destroyed. You cannot even pull many of the parts from these cars too, parts that can be reused and refurbished.

$4500 ain't a lot on some cars, if the economy keeps going down the commode as indications are showing, expect these "Obama-mobiles" to be repossessed in the next 3,6 or 12 months.

The law requires reimbursement to auto dealers.

Now they are crying because the Federal Government is not paying up?

Spoken like someone on a lifetime dole or perhaps at best who sometimes worked for someone else. What would you say if Social Security payments were postponed?

No big deal. Problem is that government workers assigned to process the C4C applications were surprised that they had to work a little harder to keep up and simply went on vacation. The problem will be remedied with the addition of 2 million more unionized workers to handle the workload and a new Clunker Czar.

Make no mistake...if it was a private company defaulting on these clunker loans, Henry Waxman would have their CEO in front of his 'Board of Inquisition' first thing Monday...

Since payment to dealers in cash 4 clunkers is delayed, interest at credit card rates should be added to the reimbursements.
