Officials Weigh Circumcision to Fight H.I.V. Risk
NY Times ^ | Published: August 23, 2009 | RONI CARYN RABIN

Public health officials are considering promoting routine circumcision for all baby boys born in the United States to reduce the spread of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.

The topic is a delicate one that has already generated controversy, even though a formal draft of the proposed recommendations, due out from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by the end of the year, has yet to be released.

Experts are also considering whether the surgery should be offered to adult heterosexual men whose sexual practices put them at high risk of infection. But they acknowledge that a circumcision drive in the United States would be unlikely to have a drastic impact: the procedure does not seem to protect those at greatest risk here, men who have sex with men.

Recently, studies showed that in African countries hit hard by AIDS, men who were circumcised reduced their infection risk by half. But the clinical trials in Africa focused on heterosexual men who are at risk of getting H.I.V. from infected female partners...

I would hate for them to actually address the real cause of AIDS! Let’s just pretend this will help and ignore the other FACTS!

I could imagine you lived in my county ... line up the County Commissioners and ... well, use your imagination.

In regards to the foreskin, God commanded the removal and it doesn’t serve any purpose.

1. The covenant that required the removal was rescinded by the New Covenant, if you subscribe to Christianity.

2. The “real estate” and nerve ending in that parcel have a meaningful effect on marital relations, which are part of G*d’s natural order.

Do you think the way every single male child is born is a MISTAKE?

There is a downside too. It is a very traumatic experience. They circumcised me when I was born, and I couldn’t walk for a year.

“I have been begging the surgeons to please remove my appendix. They want to wait until it becomes “acute.””

I’ve never seen a cute appendix. But then I’m not a doctor.

Is a cute apendix fuzzy? Wait... don’t answer that question.

On the other hand, I hope you get it taken care of before it becomes a problem.

On the only hand I have left... I don’t think the argument is whether it’s a good idea, it’s whether it is the government’s right to make that decision for you. And the way I understand it, the circumcision spoken of in the bible was more of a ceremony. I’m not sure the entire foreskin was removed (any Jewish folk out there care to enlighten?)

There is vigorous debate about that. Chopping off an unconsenting child’s private parts SHOULD be controversial.
Pulling all a child’s teeth prevents cavities, too. Maybe teaching brushing is wiser. Let adults decide whether to disfigure themselves.

First, a child’s “private parts”, meaning his penis, isn’t “chopped off”. The foreskin is removed. Maybe you should know that its’ only uncircumcised men that get penile cancer. And while you contemplate whether foreskin removal is a “disfigure”, ask yourself: do you also feel that way about haircuts and trimming a child’s toenails and fingernails? Do they “consent” to those things?

Solemn because we have yet another example of government intrusion into the management and care of our bodies.

The health nannies seem to think they can cut in on any aspect of what we do with our bodies except in the case of pregnancy...then let nobody even SUGGEST that a woman doesn’t have 100% control and sovereignty over her own body!

A nauseating case of forcing square pegs into round holes.

Even a three year old knows that is a mismatch.

Yikes!

That’s gonna leave a mark. Another good reason not to make comments too personal.

What your god says about penile mutilation is between you and him, whether he/she/it/they exist(s) or not.

Keep me, and the others out of it.

“do you also feel that way about haircuts and trimming a child’s toenails and fingernails? Do they “consent” to those things?”

No, but I hear the fiveskin is quite resilient.

I was going to respond to Antonico myself but I don’t feel like picking an illogical fight. His analogy is a little more than flawed, but who’s counting?

For those hyping this as a “gay” thing, note that the article actually says this won’t affect the rate of AIDS in the US much since circumcision doesn’t afford much protection in anal intercourse. This will protect a group that experiences a tiny fraction of the so-called “AIDS epidemic”; IOW, it will do practically nothing to fight AIDS, but give the government yet one more in-road into your health.

Since the rates are higher for women, how do you feel about female circumcism?
