Officials Weigh Circumcision to Fight H.I.V. Risk
NY Times ^ | Published: August 23, 2009 | RONI CARYN RABIN

Public health officials are considering promoting routine circumcision for all baby boys born in the United States to reduce the spread of H.I.V., the virus that causes AIDS.

The topic is a delicate one that has already generated controversy, even though a formal draft of the proposed recommendations, due out from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention by the end of the year, has yet to be released.

Experts are also considering whether the surgery should be offered to adult heterosexual men whose sexual practices put them at high risk of infection. But they acknowledge that a circumcision drive in the United States would be unlikely to have a drastic impact: the procedure does not seem to protect those at greatest risk here, men who have sex with men.

Recently, studies showed that in African countries hit hard by AIDS, men who were circumcised reduced their infection risk by half. But the clinical trials in Africa focused on heterosexual men who are at risk of getting H.I.V. from infected female partners...

Maybe you should know that its’ only uncircumcised men that get penile cancer.

Hmmm. The AMA, Royal Australian College of Physicians and the American Cancer Society all disagree with you. But who are they to know ...

But..but...but... but what two consenting adults do in the privacy of their bedroom isn't societies business (/sarc). You must be some kind of homophobic bigot (/double sarc.)

Shall I have my breasts removed in order to prevent breast cancer?

Is this why obama had "wee wee" on his mind?

Maybe he was preparing us for the next stage of his plan.

>The hard, desensitised callus skin formed on the glans because of the protective foreskin being removed might have an influence in preventing minor cuts during intercourse that might lower chances of picking up HIV and other STDs, but consider the fact that Sweden, where circumcision rates are practically nil, has a lower HIV prevalence rate than Pakistan, where practically all males are circumcised. Malaysia, another Islamic country with near-total male circumcision rates, has five times the HIV prevalence rate as Sweden.<

The reason for the difference is that Swedish men use soap when the wash themselves off. You know and I know that you can kill darn near any germ with a little warm water and soap.

Yes, so it would be idiotic to lop off body parts that could be accomodated with a little soap and water, correct?

Colistomy is even “cleaner”.

Your faeces directly deposits itself into a sanitary bag, via a sealed port on the abdomen wall. No muck, no tissues.

Correct. In other the parts of countries such as Africa and Malaysia where the daily use of soap is not common, circumcision would have a benefit, I would presume.

I have read of just such a case (no, I can't cite a source) All her sisters and mother and grand mother had breast cancer and she found a doc to remove her's as a preventive measure.

Not reccommended for everybody.

“via a sealed port on the abdomen wall.”

Another use for duct tape, no doubt.

I think maybe a large sandwich bag, a “bendy” straw and duct tape. That oughta do it!

As absurd and backward as ritual circumcision (not medical, mind you).

Correlation is not causation.

Do consider that Muslim cultures are cursed with at least three to four times the number of homosexuals (those engaging in male/male sex) that places like Sweden.

Sweden being Christian, does not allow polygamy. Islam does.

When one man has four wives, three men have no wife.

Why do you think America forced the LDS church to give up polygamy?

I didn't even smile. I've had a colostomy and 9 months later a reconnect, followed over the years by 3 seperate hernia surgeries from the original surgery, followed by periodical intestinal blockage by scar tissue build up......not too much fun.

(But hey! I can take a joke.)

No....a study was done in some African country.

Two villages....not all that far from each other.

One had all their males circumcised...the other did not. All due to religious beliefs...

The men of the both villages frequented the same places....

More men of the un-circumcised villager's contracted the HIV virus...than the circumcised villager's....

There was direct correlation....

fwiw-
