The first of four defendants in the carjacking, rape and murder of a young Tennessee couple has been sentenced to life in prison without parole by the same jury that convicted him of murder.

The sentence for 26-year-old Letalvis Cobbins of Lebanon, Ky., was announced in Knoxville after less than three hours of jury deliberation Wednesday. Cobbins took a deep breath and then sat down after the jury foreman finished delivering the sentence.

The jury convicted Cobbins on Tuesday in the January 2007 attack on 21-year-old Channon Christian and her 23-year-old boyfriend Christopher Newsom, both of Knoxville

Earlier Wednesday Christian's parents pleaded for a death sentence for the torture their daughter suffered. Cobbins' sisters and cousins from Memphis begged the jury for mercy.

"He deserved the death penalty. I can only take comfort in knowing he’ll never do this to anyone ever again."

Don't bet on it. You never know what can happen with the touchy-feely "poor guy just needed a hug" crowd

D-E-A-T-H. Totally warranted. Heinous crime, no extenuating circumstances, overwhelming evidence. D-E-A-T-H. Slow and public.

How long has it been since someone on death row in Tennessee was executed? I don’t remember reading about any, and I live here.

A death row sentence here is nothing. Maybe the animals (actually animals are above these slime that did this) that did this to these two young people can have the opportunity to spend time with some of the state’s “finest” in prison. That would be a fate worse than being isolated on death row.

Didn’t this slimeball get life with the “possibility of parole?”

Watching the female victim’s father on TV, my heart was torn from my chest. I wish they’d turn him loose on this scum — THAT would be justice.

I was against the death penalty for many years, but cases like this are tailor made for the DP.

There’s no such thing as life without parole: the dems still exist, and he can always find Jesus.

Were it me, I’d put him in a cell and let him die of natural causes: no food, no water. It’d only take something like three days or so, which isn’t nearly long enough, but it’s cheap, and there’s no required executioner.

But then, I’m not really a nice guy, although I do play one in life.

Suffering in this life is something I can affect. Suffering in the next life is above my pay grade.

That’s what I read too. A disproportionately black jury.

(M.E.’s testimony)
The suffering

Using gruesome photographs displayed on a movie-size screen, Mileusnic-Polchan detailed that suffering in a courtroom packed with relatives and friends of the slain couple.

Newsom, she said, was raped both by an object and at least one person. DNA tests were inconclusive as to identity. The sexual assault would have occurred soon after the kidnapping and, at most, a couple of hours before his death, she said.

His hands were tied behind his back. His ankles eventually were bound with a belt. Socks were stuffed in his mouth. A bandana was tied around his eyes. A sweatshirt was placed over his head and tied with his own shoelaces around his neck. He was shot three times—once in the lower back, once in the upper back shoulder near his neck, and once execution-style to the side of his head. His body was then set on fire.

Mileusnic-Polchan said Christian was kept alive for more than 12 hours and perhaps as long as a full day. The attack on her took place over time, she said.

Early on in the attack, she was orally raped, causing a membrane in her mouth to be torn, the doctor testified. She was raped vaginally and anally—more than once—over the course of her captivity, Mileusnic-Polchan said. At some point a few hours before her death, someone attacked her genital region, likely kicking her and perhaps even striking that area with an object, she said.

“This was no simple rape,” she said.

Christian was hog-tied and her lower body stuffed inside five different large black trash bags. A small white plastic grocery bag was wrapped around her face, and she was pushed down into a trash can. The medical examiner said she suffocated to death. Her eyes were still partially open when she died.

Closing arguments are expected to begin today.

I’d be perfectly satisfied if a life sentence instead of the death penalty included banishment.....no tv, no radio, no visits, no tv interviews.....nothing....just a cell....maybe a book once in a while....

I have posted threads to this atrocity and let folks say what they feel. This sentence doesn’t surprise me. I will refrain from the Davidson outcome at this point.

The woman's dad gave a pretty good description after the sentence was passed of what this monsters life will be in prison. Basically all he wants and needs he just can't go home. Her dad visited a prison and saw for himself. I believe him.

There is no such thing as life without parole as long as we have liberal lawmakers, governors, and judges, who for some insane reason release these animals once again upon society. The death penalty is an absolute final act. Unfortunately Tennessee is very slow to use it even though it is legal.

Wasn’t there something about a scrub-brush and either Clorox or Drano in the story somewhere along the way, too?
