The proposed tax notices arriving in mailboxes in Miami-Dade and Broward counties in recent days have stirred a wave of protest, with homeowners taking to the streets Thursday and others dialing their property appraisers' offices by the thousands.
Many homeowners, already feeling pressure from high unemployment, a tumbling stock market and dwindling property values, were angry when they opened their TRIM -- Truth In Millage -- notices to find a property tax increase awaiting them, too.
"They are going berserk," said Charlotte Greenbarg, a Hollywood resident and president of the Broward Coalition, which represents homeowners and condo owners. "People are absolutely flipping out."

As we know from recent elections, Broward County gives huge majorities to Democrats, year in, year out.

The tyranny of property tax has been wrongful since more than just property owners were allowed the vote.

In many places where the GOP is in charge it is no different. The GOP ran many of the places where I lived and property tax rates kept going up up up with no attempts to control spending.
Are the property taxes voted on? Well, then it would be the voters fault for agreeing to them in the first place, right?
Make all gooberment agencies fire 50% of their personnel immediately.
Send the savings to the overtaxed property owners.
The property taxes are voted on, but the property value is not. If the county says your property is now worth 15% more than last year, your tax bill goes up even if the millage rate does not.
Any assessment that goes up in this economic climate is fiction.
accross this nation property owners are footing for mass fraud in every agency.....taxes are higher than housepayments .......when they cant raise the amount of tax then they raise appraisals. i think alot of people could probably keep thier homes if taxes were lower and appraisals more realistic.....
All levels of government, all over the country, are overdue for lots of backlash. Here’s hoping that the backlash will be simultaneous and extreme. We need nearly 100% turnover in our public officials.

This is why California enacted prop 13, 31 years ago, the libs here hate it and are trying to do away with it.
Exactly and about damn time people started ‘flipping out’ about their taxes. In this economy, since property values are falling, so should property taxes that are based on assessed values. Why is it that everyone but government is supposed to cut back?
It’s actually Miami-Dade county.
I find the property tax to be the most offensive tax of all. It goes up without fail every year and not just by a few percentage points. We once had our land value multiplied by a factor of 5 in one fell swoop during a township wide reassessment. We contested it and of course got no relief.
Then there are the school referendums, which the dolts around here keep approving to the tune of 500 bucks per referendum and there have been 2 of these in the last 4 years.
Everytime they act like they only need one referendum and everything will be fine for years and years, and a couple years later there’s another referendum and the idiots vote for for it again. We lost the last vote by 60% yes to 40% no. In total these referendums tacked on 1000 dollars extra to our tax bills every year since they passed.
And they keep raising the assessments too. Last fall when the bills came, the local news interviewed an assessor to see why the assessments went up in the poor housing market. He said they made the valuations early in the year. He then claimed that this year’s valuations would reflect the housing downturn. We know enough not to believe that. And since then there have been claims in the news that housing values in our state are not down much at all. Total BS. They will rob us again. If we don’t like it, and don’t pay, they take our property. It’s the perfect scam. And the teacher’s unions laugh all the way to the bank.
