Morse code isn’t needed for any ham license any more.
Hey, why not brush up on this stuff NOW? Find the software and telcom modems and start setting up boards in the next month or two. Distribute dial-in numbers through private messages to other FReepers in your state, then as things take shape, assign contacts between the groups. Keep the info off the main discussion boards.
My land line might actually be used again (Note: web outages will take out some phone networks, too - separate your phone and internet service).
Cool ;-)
Lest I encourage any kind of bad behavior, let me emphasize that Amateur Radio is licensed by the FCC and “bootleggers” or unlicensed operators are fairly easily caught and subject to substantial fines. The point I was trying to make is not to encourage rogue radio operation, but that ham radio will still work when *everything* else goes down, including the power grid. That’s because it relies on nothing but what Mother Nature provides - the reflective layer in the ionosphere that acts like a giant radio mirror, causing signals to “skip” for long distances. (And neither Obama nor all his Czars can control Mother Nature!)
But as with any other kind of emergency preparedness, knowledge is key. Once you know how to cut a dipole antenna, for instance, you can rig up the ability to communicate from household junk. Ham Radio provides the opportunity to learn those skills, and it’s fun too!
See http://www.hello-radio.org/ for more information.
Of course not, Silly.
"Obama Blue."
A phone bank is exactly what needs to be put in place NOW. I mentioned this yesterday on onther post...
"Maybe we should think about setting up an alternative message system - which can be done easier that you may think.
It works on a mathematically infallible principal. It's a phone bank system: Everyone has 10 people on their list to call and pass on information. Each of those 10 - who have 10...etc. By just the 5th round of calling out - 100,000 can be reached - in less than an hour. (do the math).
Now, with several of these banks all over the country - vital information can be gotten out to millions within one hour. Just one phone bank per state could quickly reach millions.
The only way you thwart an enemies plans is to be smarter...and to be prepared to end run their tactics.
Mathematics is the one thing that is unchangeable - it is what it is. (BTW, for a fun math exercise, if a millionaire should ever offer you a wish - any wish - tell them you want 1 penny today, 2 pennies tomorrow, 4 pennies the third day and so on, doubling the money each day for 30 days. That's right. Just 30 days. Get them to sign an agreement before they get a chance to do the math ;o) How much money will you have a the end of the month? Will you be a multimillionaire? Do the math - :o)
The Mormon Church has millions of members around the world. They have this system and if a catastrophe hit, they can reach every member in a very short time -
as to 'throw away phones" - think on that one...It's reported that more people now have cell phones than have land lines now.
Indeed, many ask me why I still have my land line. Two reasons: ONE - I live where we have frequent power outages...the infamous ice storm of '98 left me without power for 19 days. The only link to the outside was my land line.
TWO - if they shut down the net, they can also - and will - pull the plug on cell phones. (An aside: What about the Super Grid that they have all ready to implement? They say it's mainly to save energy by having the ability, with the grid, to control your thermostat. That means they can also shut your power down totally. These people have been working all this out since their little WH puppet was in diapers. They've got their ducks in a row. It's up to us to keep out birdshot handy.)
rGet those phone banks built now - as to ID - each person would only need to know the names and/or numbers to 10 people. Security should lists fall into 'other' hands.
I can't believe we are talking about such things in this country.
But the Communists didn't take over Russia because the Russian peoples mind-set was such...and the Nazi's didn't take over Germany because the German People were of that mindset.
These despots have lived in every country and age since time began. All they need to do, to paraphrase, to take over is for us to do nothing, to not be prepared ahead...we gotta be good Scouts.
TOGETHER WE STAND OR WE FALL APART.
That’s true. The prime virtue of Morse Code is that it can cut through noise when nothing else can. So if you can learn it so much the better.
The problem with the cheap supermarket phones is that the minutes have a finite life span. You have to keep feeding them to keep them alive.
Besides, if the Obamaführer decides to shut down the Internet, he will shut down the cell networks too.
for the phone network (phone bank system) see post #24.
We’ve been talking about this. Dh has been licensed & knowsw about ham radios but we are wondering if it’s best to get the radio & not the license given the current state of affairs.
I joined a Yahoo group that was going to use the new walkie talkie’s for emergency communications but it never took off. Those can be used along with cb’s for local communication...we need to start now....
CB Radios.
I work in the telecommunications industry and can say the CLEA act gets the gov into all switching centers.
“HAM radios require licences”
Legal ones do. Clandestine ones don’t.
And ALL of them can be listened to or jammed, or DF’d.
When the TV goes off and the radio goes off and the internet goes off, step outside and listen, if you hear gunfire go toward it. it’ll be Concord2. That will be your signal.
Blackberrys use providers. What if 0bama shuts down my provider?
Before the Internet was available to the public, bulletin board systems (BBS) were in many cities.
They were great for inter-city communications, had forums, chat, file upload and download, etc. They were run over telephone lines, so their speed was limited to modem speeds.

Considering all the questions about what is going on in Washington, it is worthwhile to think about alternatives.
I was thinking of getting an “inexpensive” HAM set and just listening for now. If the SHTF then who cares if you have a license to broadcast. I see the problem as being able to identify each other. Infiltration for misinformation or tracking would be a big problem.
What good are our guns if we are forced off our rural land into cities? The control of the RED areas of the electoral map gives our side a considerable advantage and they have known it since 2000 when Gore tried to steal the election, if not before.
There is a program of Rural Cleansing and a war on small farmers that is already underway. The "food safety" bills, the cut-off of irrigation water in Oregon and Central California, the NAIS animal id act where the government transforms your private property into a "premises" that they can enter at will without warrant, the drying up of credit to small farmers, etc. etc. all add up. Small towns are getting shut down too as bank close branches, GM and Chrysler dealerships close, and credit for small businesses disappears.
Obama/Schumer/Waxman want to get those who cling to their guns and religion out of the countryside that controls roads, bridges, rail, and food. They would rather we bought food from China.
“By just the 5th round of calling out - 100,000 can be reached”
With net anonymity, it takes some work to find out who we are. Not much, though- an IP address and a call to the ISP, or a court order to Free Republic LLC. This net would cast wide.
But a phone tree takes only a few enemy agents to crack, or at least to track. Any member in a tree will get the identity of the incoming (caller ID) and the downstream ten as well. A little social engineering can reach further. The agent calls his ten (with a slightly modified message) and calls her handler as well, the militia is coming!
A call-in-only BBS may be more secure, especially if the incoming calls are not logged. Then, if the enemy finds the server they will have to put a trap-and-trace on it via court order to the telco, since capturing the machine itself won’t easily get a list of identities. There will be no outgoing calls. Someone with the number and security code gets the current load of data on the BBS server, and never other node members.
A dial-in-only voice message system would also work for short messages and one-time-pad cryptos for specified people such as other network nodes. That will avoid a sniffer looking for dialup computer transmissions, which would stick out like a sore thumb if the nets were blocked.
Who makes dialup connectivity and server gear?
Who makes voice messaging systems (which may be easier to get)?
Business would come to a stop. How do businesses interact with suppliers and customers these days? How do banks interact with each other?
Years ago, businesses would maintain leased lines. These days, it's increasingly encrypted connections over the Internet.
I can see the feds deciding that certain web sites will be kicked off from Internet connectivity, but they can't shut down the whole net. So, instead of Doomesday scenarios, consider how we would recreate FR quickly if a federal agency just issues a series of edicts to ISPs to shut off a whole bunch of conservative sites.
These walkie talkie’s go 25 miles..along with cb’s would be good for local communications...think about sun power to run things for a backup...
