Patriot Emergency Communications System Needed

I live in interior Alaska. The net is the only way I get news other than NPR and that’s not even an option as far as I’m concerned. There is no cell service and all phone service is over a satellite. I do have my own sat phone in addition to the commercial service.

But for years many of us have used high frequency radio. The one I have have now cost me less than $700 and has a tremendous range both in distance and frequencies available. I could even buy a modem for it if I chose to. It is a reliable means of both voice and code communication and email if that was still working. No ham license required, range is over 100 miles.

The other possiblity is marine band radio. Cheaper but more restricted in distance and terrain features.

Before the Internet was available to the public, bulletin board systems (BBS) were in many cities. They were great for inter-city communications, had forums, chat, file upload and download, etc. They were run over telephone lines, so their speed was limited to modem speeds.

Important point: how many PCs have phone modems any more?

Some years ago I worked with a distance-measuring machine called a ‘Tellurometer’ that utilized microwave technology. It was big and cumbersome but it had the added capability of voice communication with the “slave” station. Since then I seem to remember reading on the internet about a way to convert an ordinary kitchen microwave for communications. I didn’t pursue it since the S was nowhere close to the Fan... then! Anybody know anything about such a project? It would provide line-of-sight, narrow beam communications over fairly long distances and everybody has a microwave or two plus there is hardly a house anymore that doesn’t have a microwave “dish” on the roof.

That's a mighty big field, and includes legacy switching and transmission 'systems' (like copper incl POTS thru to modern fiber control by SS7 protocol) as well as cellular (several varieties of technology in the US now incl GSM, GPRS, WCDMA, CDMA200) and now TCP/IP networks.
