'Tortilla' Warning Falls Flat (Forest Service apologizes)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | August 29, 2009 | Martin Salazar

The U.S. Forest Service is apologizing for warning that national forest campers who eat tortillas, drink Tecate beer and listen to Spanish music could be armed marijuana growers.

The warning was issued Wednesday to the media by Forest Service law enforcement officials who are investigating illegal marijuana plantations in Colorado's national forests.

Tortilla packaging and Tecate cans were among the items authorities found recently when they broke up a pot-growing operation in the Pike National Forest southwest of Denver.

"I think that's the most entertaining story that I've heard on Latinos in quite a while," Jose Armas, a longtime Latino rights activist in New Mexico, said Friday. "I think this notion that government people are so misunderstanding about Latino culture that they have the naivete and the stupidity to put out stories like this, it's entertaining, but it's a little pathetic, also."

Polly Baca, co-chairwoman of the Colorado Latino Forum, told The Associated Press that the warning amounted to racial profiling.

Reacting to the criticism, the U.S. Forest Service quickly apologized.

"It is inexcusable, and we regret that this insensitivity distracted attention from the real problem of illegal marijuana cultivation on federal land and the threats to human safety and environmental degradation it poses," the Forest Service statement said.

The earlier Forest Service warning signs of possible drug trafficking included "tortilla packaging, beer cans, Spam, Tuna, Tecate beer cans," and campers who play Spanish music and speak Spanish. I passed it around my office to loud guffaws by Hispanics and Anglos both, but some discust that they (the FS) could be so stupid.

Tortillas and Tecate beer sound like like something I would do. The Mexican music is pretty good too in small doses.

Jose Armas sounds like your typical unwanted guest ~ not anything is satisfactory to his standards.

Time top ship him back where he came from, Tecate cans and all.

They forgot to check with Big Sis. She reserves criminality for those not registered as democraps or who may have served in that awful military.

Drinking Tecate, eating fish tacos, Smokin’ dope and playin’ Mariachi is appropriate behavior.

Cool we may all be doin’ that soon! Idiot Fascist Forests of America.

This would explain my brush with police and rangers at Manzano, then...

Who does NOT eat tortillas, and Tecate and lime is pretty good. Single-serving Spam in a tortilla with some jalapeno relish and requeson washed down with a can of Tecate that I squeezed a half-lime into is a favorite camping lunch, amigos.

The bags of fertilizer were for, um, my home garden.

But really, that was a stupid thing for them to say, even if they had carefully prepared their profile from real forensic scrutiny, as stupid as that “pull them over if they have the Gadsden flag on a bumper sticker” profile.

It was a stupid profile but what do want to bet that Jose Armas believes every word of the DHS right-wing terrorist memo?

Note to self: next time we go camping, play the Iranian music instead.

A while back, our local police tracked down a pair of rapist-murderers because they frequently ordered pineapple and pepperoni pizza.

Ok, so where that did the FS say Hispanic? If that’s what they found at the site, then that’s what they found. What, are they supposed to lie and claim they found a complete set of Thomas the Tank Engine toys?
