Sen. Edward Kennedy's family fortune not only fueled his brothers' presidential campaigns and his eight terms in the U.S. Senate, it also helped drive the family's liberal legacy and forge Kennedy's lifelong crusade for universal health care.
Just how wealthy was Kennedy when he died Tuesday at the age of 77 after a yearlong battle with brain cancer?
Untangling a family fortune that reaches back to the early days of the past century is murky business, but the annual federal financial disclosure reports Kennedy was required to file provide at least a' partial glimpse into his personal capital.
As a U.S. senator, Kennedy earned a base salary of $165,200 a year, but that just skimmed the surface of his net worth.
On the most recent report in 2008, which includes his own assets and those of his wife and any dependents, Kennedy listed a string of publicly and non-publicly traded trusts and assets. Under the filing rules, Kennedy was only required to place the value of those assets within a range, rather than give an exact dollar amount.
The report placed the net worth of his publicly traded assets somewhere between a low of $15 million and high of $72.6 million.
Just a year earlier,

History it seems is not without a sense of irony.

Mostly, they believe in spreading other peoples’ wealth from what I see. I had to bury my own Dad a few months back. He earned his own money and used that money to do good for others. He spent much of his time and money defending the lives of the unborn, volunteering his efforts to work with the homeless and dispossessed. Quiet, humble and effective. Honored and respected in his passing by people who were not there for the “politics” of it. The Kennedys have been choking on their ill-gotten wealth for years and years, but don’t have the sense to even see it. A pity.
Oswald made two almost perfect shots with one.
There is the truth of America (as opposed to the Kennedy-0bama pseudo-America).
No doubt that they are trust fund kids with very nice allowances and most likely ghost salaries for serving on various boards or committees of the Kennedy funds and likely cross membership on other 'old money' trusts and foundations.
But they can't get at the principle. As to where the total fortune stands, that would be up to the skill of the fund managers.
Shame they didn't have Bernie Madoff managing it. ;~))
My brother’s Carcano could not hit a deer within clubbing distance. It must have had a hard life before he bought it.
It often suprises how many of my liberal Catholic friends get confused by this, but the Catholic faith actually has nothing against individuals amassing great wealth. As a matter of fact, the Church encourages individual achievement for God's glory, and this necessarily includes at professions that are rewarding. What the Church does require is that every individual give 10% annually to charity. The confusion comes from the parable where Jesus says it is more difficult for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to get into Heaven. He was talking about the added temptations, not any prejudice God harbors against rich people. There are many good rich people.
No, I fully understand that and realize that the Church doesn’t call for poverty among its members. The liberal Catholics I know are usually real quick to tell ME to give my money away to the cause of THEIR choosing. I am a practicing Catholic myself, by the way. Acts of charity undertaken with the money taken from others by force are not acts of charity.
Well most of them had never been fired and were only dropped once.
Sorry everyone!
