On Bullying, Costco Disconnects from Reality
American Thinker ^ | September 7, 2009 | Ed Kaitz

Millions of Americans who shop at Costco receive the retail giant’s monthly magazine The Costco Connection. I have to confess however that my copy of the publication usually never makes it past the garage. Not so the recent August issue, which promotes on the cover a “Back to School” series of essays for parents and children. Since one of the essays promised to take on the issue of bullying, I decided to take a closer look.

Bullies seem to be everywhere these days. From the schoolyard to the political arena thugs young and old have been learning that threats and intimidation are tried and true tactics in the face of frail opposition. The tragic kidnapping, repeated rape, and eighteen-year-long nightmare of young Jaycee Lee Dugard highlights the importance of effectively resisting those whose identities are fashioned by crushing the weak.

Imagine my utter disbelief then when my eyes landed on the advice offered by the two nationally recognized bullying “experts” interviewed for Costco’s story “Stop Hassling Me: Breaking the Cycle of Bullying.” After getting past a rather offensively staged photograph showing two young white girls taunting an African-American schoolmate, the reader is treated to a series of tips for kids by New York City school psychologist and psychotherapist Izzy Kalman. For kids who find themselves on the wrong end of a bully for example Kalman offers the following suggestion:

This is exactly what the liberals want our military, intelligence services and police forces to do.....answer force with flowers.

The Costco article is just youth indoctrination.

” “If kids hit you and you’re not hurt, act like nothing happened. This way you look tough and cool because you don’t get upset over nonsense. If they keep hitting or pushing you, ask them calmly, ‘Are you mad at me?’ If they aren’t, they’ll stop hitting you. If they are angry, they’ll tell you why. You can discuss the matter, apologize if appropriate, and they will also stop hitting you.” “

Obama/Hillary foreign policy, in a nutshell.....

Continuing the agenda of racism is more distrubing by depicting 2 wites taunting a black. It’s not about bullying it’s about the agenda.

This is why my kids have been taught self defense by an instructor who believes in no mercy. If the bully starts it, my kids will finish it.

I think perhaps they missed the youtube sensational video of the pack of girls who attacked the one girl repeatedly for over half an hour while she pleaded with them in every way to stop. She even lost consciencous twice during the beating.

I think there was a Dilbert cartoon whose punchline was something like, "In any business organization the incompetents get put in charge of publishing the newsletter."

They feature reviews on top selling books in the magazine, but never would cover Mark Levin's Liberty and Tyranny, even though it was the Top Seller for weeks.

How times have changed -when I was bullied as a kid before the hippies’ day, the principal suggested that shy little me should toughen up and fight back!

I have found that the only thing that stops a bully is a bloody nose.

Children quickly learn that this junk doesn’t work.

Back when I was a teacher I had to sit through “bully training” where we were taught how to spot a bully, etc. As if we all hadn’t been to elementary school. When we went through all the hallmarks of a bully, they described our school principal very well.

It’s just a matter of incentives. If there’s a fight, teachers/administrators have to handle it. If there’s no overt fight, then they can all pretend to ignore it. Problem solved.

“Be nice to kids when they are mean to you, and before long they will stop being mean. This is known as the Golden Rule, and is the solution to bullying.”

What a crock of crap.
When I was in school a neighborhood friend who was defined as “special education” was freqeuntly bullied at school. I found that a good ass whooping usually brought that to an end. Bullies tend to be cowards that pick on the weak. The article basically intsructs kids to be weak. What nonsense.

I know a kid who was bullied. The school told him to change his behavior that made the bully attack him. So, the victim was at fault. Of course it didn’t work, since who knows what the kid did to ‘make’ the bully attack?

One day the bully was fussing at him from behind. The kid spun around to tell him to stop and accidentally elbowed the kid in the head, knocking him off his feet. The bully stopped bothering him and even tried to be his friend.

“Coloroso suggests for example several “don’ts” for parents to consider, among them:

“Don’t tell your child to fight back.””

What a wonderful way to teach them to be adult sheep, easily led by bully politicians to slaughter!

I did my tormentor in 5th grade with a 2x2 piece of pine that I was carrying home when he caught up to me. He got bloodied a bit but didn’t break anything. His daddy threatened to sue my daddy but nothing came of it except that the fellow didn’t bother me again. The worst part was that I was still afraid of the guy for a couple of weeks until I realized that his interests had changed.
