'Doctors told me it was against the rules to save my premature baby'

Doctors left a premature baby to die because he was born two days too early, his devastated mother claimed yesterday.

Sarah Capewell begged them to save her tiny son, who was born just 21 weeks and five days into her pregnancy - almost four months early.

They ignored her pleas and allegedly told her they were following national guidelines that babies born before 22 weeks should not be given medical treatment.

Miss Capewell, 23, said doctors refused to even see her son Jayden, who lived for almost two hours without any medical support.

She said he was breathing unaided, had a strong heartbeat and was even moving his arms and legs, but medics refused to admit him to a special care baby unit.

Miss Capewell is now fighting for a review of the medical guidelines

Oh, this is just so horrific! At least she was allowed to cuddle and try to comfort her baby. And the baby went straight to be with Jesus. I feel so sad for the Mom, though. How frustrated she must feel. No one would help her precious baby. Guess they thought the baby was not human.

End times alert.

**’Doctors told me it was against the rules to save my premature baby’ **

That’s nonsense — we are talking about a human being here!

The horror here is caused by the cut and dried number of weeks and days.

Exactly. No doctor can know for sure the exact date of conception, let alone a govt bureaucrat.

So appalling. Quinn and Rose out of Pittsburgh were talking about this at the end of their show this morning.

Hell! They should check the “physicians” for a damn pulse. Sound like walking-dead zombie monsters.

"Just following orders..."?

Any normal person would have rounded off to within 48 hours.

What’s so asinine about this case besides the obvious, is that how in the WORLD can they tell the baby was “2 days too young”... SERIOUSLY. Unless she knew the EXACT date she conceived it’s all GUESSING based upon last menstrual cycle as to how “old” the baby is!!! He could’ve been 3 days PAST their mark and there would be no way to tell...

I suppose there is no way to file malpractice suits against the doctor, or against the hospital either.

I'm no expert in UK health insurance laws, but I believe you're correct.

Oh gosh, this is so heartbreaking.

I can't believe what this young mother must be going through. It must be devastating to see her baby breathing on his own for 4 hours, only to see him die unattended just because the medical guidelines mandated that he shouldn't get life saving help.

James Paget Hospital in Norfolk refused to comment on the case but said it was not responsible for setting the guidelines relating to premature births.

You would have thought the "Doctors" could have covered for the baby somehow. What is happening to the hearts of our "health care workers"?

the chances for saving the baby are very low...alas. The lungs aren't developed enough for the kid to live...and putting him on a respirator probably would have prolonged his dying.

link

It found 10 percent of babies born at 22 weeks survived to one year compared with 53% of those born at 23 weeks and 85% of those born at 26 weeks into the pregnancy. The later the birth in pregnancy the more likely the baby survived without any major illness and half of those born at 26 weeks had no serious health issues.

but 21 weeks? Even lower...

The docs should have just given routine treatment and not blamed the "rules".

When I was pregnant with my son about 25 years ago, my friend’s Mom came to visit me. She had been a midwife in her younger days. She told many stories about her experiences. She said that once she was called to come to help a young woman who had gone into labor prematurely. When the baby boy was born, he was so small she held him in the palm of her hand. She said she knew there was no hope. So, she bathed him and wrapped him in a covering and placed him in a shoebox and gave him to the mother. She left for home knowing that baby could not live. She said that about 20 years later, a nice looking young man came to visit her. He introduced himself as the baby that wasn’t supposed to make it.
