Pelosi: Forget censure of Wilson (it would actually permit an airing of grievances and defense)

Democrats must drop efforts to censure a GOP representative who shouted "You lie" during President Obama's speech, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Thursday.

Democratic leaders Thursday were looking into what formal action the House could take against Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., whose outburst during Obama's address on healthcare reform to a joint session of Congress the night before, shocked the chamber, The Hill reported.

"It's time for us to talk about healthcare, not Joe Wilson," said Pelosi, D-Calif.

One option Democrats considered was censure.

Pelosi nixed censure, as well as a call for Wilson to apologize on the floor.

"I'm on to healthcare reform. I'm not going to discuss Joe Wilson," she said. "I think his action spoke for itself. He has apologized. He will figure out what is appropriate for him to do."

After Obama told Congress that his healthcare reform plan would not permit illegal immigrants be eligible for public health insurance, Wilson shouted, "You lie," drawing boos from the floor and criticism from both sides of the aisle. Wilson later apologized.

Democratic Caucus Chairman John Larson of Connecticut said Wilson should apologize.

"It's clear that the members of our caucus are quite upset and quite angry," Larson said after a caucus meeting. "We are also in the process of looking at what is appropriate conduct on the floor."

Obama, asked about the incident after meeting with his Cabinet, said Wilson "apologized quickly and with out equivocation, and I'm appreciative of that."

"I do think that, as I said last night, we have to get to the point where we can have a conversation about big, important issues that matter to the American people, without vitriol, without name-calling, without the assumption of the worst in other people's motives," he said

“The Nancy Botoxi doesn’t want the hearings to reveal that Obama actually outlies Clinton - a remarkable achievement.”

While we’re debating among ourselves over whether his “outburst” was appropriate, our enemies are adjusting their America-destroying strategy to changing circumstances.

Joe Wilson presented us with an unexpected opportunity. It was short-lived, however, and we might’ve squandered it already - in infantile celebration and petty bickering.

No wonder we’re losing.

"Obama’s speech will always and forever be known as the “You Lie” speech."

True.

Reminds me of when the fan called Bob Dylan "Judas" for playing an electric guitar.

Also this:

As a result of the popularity of the letter, even in the English-speaking world, J'accuse! has become a common generic expression of outrage and accusation against a powerful person.

The emperor wears no clothes.

Barack held his tv program in Congress last night instead of the Oval Office so he could appear to be “a man of the people” and get those hand claps from the DNC on cue.

If the DNC is permitted to interrupt the speech, then so to Joe Wilson.

Dissent is patriotic.

Nancy’s quietly planning on staking Wilson to a fire ant hill and covering him with honey.

If only Clarence Thomas had be able to tell Joe Biden "You lie" in Joe's opening remarks at the Clarence Thomas confirmation hearing.

Senator Biden was the first questioner. Instead of the softball questions he’d promised to ask, he threw a beanball straight at my head, quoting from a speech I’d given four years earlier at the Pacific Legal Foundation and challenging me to defend what I’d said. ”I find attractive the arguments of scholars such as Stephen Macedo, who defend an activist Supreme Court that would strike down laws restricting property rights.” That caught me off guard, and I had no recollection of making so atypical a statement, which shook me up even more. “Now, it would seem to me what you were talking about,” Senator Biden went on to say, “is you find it attractive the fact that they are activists and they would like to strike down existing laws that impact on restricting the use of property rights, because you know, that is what they write about.”

Since I didn’t remember making the statement in the first place, I didn’t know how to respond to it. All I could say in reply was that “it has been some time since I have read Professor Macedo … But I don’t believe that in my writings I have indicated that we should have an activist Supreme Court.” It was, I knew, a weak answer. Fortunately, though, the young lawyers who had helped prepare me for the hearing had loaded all of my speeches into a computer and at the first break in the proceedings they looked this one up. The senator, they found, had wrenched my words out of context. I looked at the text and saw that the passage he’d read out loud had been immediately followed by two other sentences: “But the libertarian argument overlooks the place of the Supreme Court in a scheme of separation of powers. One does not strengthen self-government and the rule of law by having the non-democratic branch of the government make policy.” The point I’d been making was the opposite of the one that Senator Biden claimed I had made.

The same reason was behind not officially honoring Michael Jackson as Sheila Jackson Lee had tried to do. It wasn’t “frivolous”. It would have permitted congressional discussion of Jackson’s molestation charges.

Pelosi doesn’t want censure because that takes debate and they don’t want the truth to come out. Go ahead and try and censure Wilson, see what comes out.

I’m not surprised.

In the first place, he has two defenses, nicely summarized by links on Drudge:

1. What he said was true. Obama did lie.

2. The Democrats behaved much worse at Bush’s State of the Union speech, and nobody criticized them.

Finally, as already noted, the more attention his “You lie” gets, the worse Obama looks. Because a lot of people have started to notice that he does, in fact, habitually lie—especially about health care.

She’s right and it’s a politically astute move that will get her points.

As a bonus (for us), the KOS kiddies and DUmmies will be apoplectic.
