ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- Big cars and trucks are out. Smaller ones that offer more for your dollar are in. And many drivers will hang onto the new cars they buy longer.
We've seen some of this before -- in the 1970s. But there's reason to believe that this time, American car-buying habits have changed forever.
Scarred by the worst financial crisis since the 1930s and still leery of high gas prices, people are walking into showrooms intent on spending less. The trend is strongest among baby boomers, who are 44 to 63 years old and make up a quarter of the population, dealers and industry analysts say.

....I don't believe that....we Americans love big cars with lots of power...as soon as the housing/stock/employment markets come back; big cars will be back.
Man that's got to be some really cool stuff, do you grown your own.
Just look where the article was written...enough said.
“”.....there’s reason to believe that this time, American car-buying habits have changed forever.”
I’d like to know how these people come up with such ludicrous statements. How can you get 4-H kids fair projects (horses, calves, pigs, goats, etc.) to the fair with a car you can barely fit one human in?!
think I am going to file this one under “getting their minds right”
Another Luddite liberal creaming their jeans over what they think is the end of the SUV and truck. Sorry, Charlie, an econobox doesn’t haul America.
Watch Ford, Honda, Toyota and other non US Government Carmakers sell tons of those cars that Americans supposedly don’t want.
Damn... hope the EMTs had the big sponge with them that day.
“Man that’s got to be some really cool stuff, do you grown your own.”
This article sounds like it was written in a hot tub with Jason Blair types try to project their wet dreams as reality. While smoking some of that really cool stuff.
Because we got a communist dictator in the white house, stupid.
I used to love 6 and 8 cylinder cars — lots of power. Now I’m in my 40’s and 4 cylinders in a Camry does me fine.
I still say that cars should have 12 cylinders, and motorcycles 2.
i probably should not tell these people that i am planning to get rid of my gas sipping subaru forrester and get a late 60’s or early 70’s gas guzzling land yacht. my son is 14 and he has outgrown our clown car. i would prefer something with air bags and all wheel drive but i really want a land yacht. but really don’t tell them, kay?
I am in my 50s and want my 8 cylinder Tahoe: it pulls the boat and if I am trout fishing I carry a 9’flyrod without breaking it down
Nothing is “FOREVER” anyone uses that term in relation to a consumer trend is an abject idiot.
“...as soon as the housing/stock/employment markets come back

...I’m making plenty of money in the markets right now....just paid cash for a new V-8 pick up....too bad you’re not.
