Steelman passes on 2010 bid (Missouri)

Former Missouri state Treasurer Sarah Steelman (R) has announced she won't run for anything in 2010.

The treasurer was expected early on to run for Senate in a primary against Rep. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.). But after opening an exploratory committee, she backed off that race and started looking at running for Blunt's open House seat.

Now she's doing neither.

Steelman, of Rolla, said in a statement that she has "unfinished work'' at home, raising her youngest son with her husband. David Steelman, a prominent lawyer and fellow former legislator.

"Michael is 14 and I want to raise him here in Missouri –in the heart of this country, not in Washington D.C.,'' she said, noting that her two oldest sons are in college.

Sarah Steelman had made an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2008, losing in the GOP primary to then-U.S. Rep. Kenny Hulshof, who was defeated last November by the Democrat, now-Gov. Jay Nixon, who then was attorney general.

In her statement, she acknowledged what many political activists suspected:

"For months I have considered running for the U. S. Senate and I have been honored and gratified by people throughout the state and country who have encouraged me to run," she said. "I loved serving the people of Missouri as State Treasurer and a State Senator, and I struggled with my decision because I know there is much work that needs to be done, or undone, in Washington."

I'll vote for Roy Blunt...
But I believe in Sarah Steelman.

I hope she reenters politics someday.

Check out Chuck Purgason. He’s more of a conservative than Blunt.

Sounds like Sarah really wants to be Governor. Maybe she’ll get the shot this next round. I’ll vote for her in the Primary.

Sigh.

Wish he was a prominent engineer, physician, businessman, or butcher or baker or candlestick maker.

Anything but another lawyer.

I've heard of him. Are you talking about him running for Senate or for Blunt’s open seat in the 7th Congressional?

I wouldn't think he has enough name recognition (money generating power) to run for Senate and I believe Billy Long is the most likely nominee for The House seat. Still it's early and time will tell.

Purgason is running for Bond's US Senate seat. You're correct; Chuck doesn't have the name recognition Roy has.
I will hold my nose and vote for Blunt if he gets the nomination but he and his kind are part of the problem in Washington.

OH NO!!!!!!!! This is a tragedy! I LOVE Sarah Steelman! I really wish she would’ve ran for the nomination.

I mean, I live in Dallas County, MO, next door to Blunt’s district (we’re in Ike Skelton’s district-—UGH!), I attended SBU, the school where Blunt was President (though after his tenure) and I respect the man. However, I think he’s been in DC too long and the Blunt name carries a lot of baggage.

I just don’t know if Roy Blunt has the ability to defeat Robin Carnahan. We CANNOT get another Carnahan in office! ENOUGH of the Carnahan and Blunt dynasties!

I agree with you, Eric, I’ll hold my nose and vote for Blunt if he gets the nomination, but I’ll check out Purgason, in the meantime.

We need someone strong to go against Robin Carnahan, bottom line!

"I will hold my nose and vote for Blunt"

I'm so sick of doing this! Why can we not find a good candidate in MO? I'm just waiting til Blunt comes anywhere near where I live and I'm going to confront him on his past and why he deserves my vote. I see no reason to allow him to change seats and continue his reign. Throw the bums out!

Every political effort Steelman makes is an uphill battle. The state party machine doesn’t like her because she isn’t “one of them”.
That’s why we got Kenny Hulshof for a gubanatorial nominee instead of Steelman. It’s the same political machine that has stuck us with Kit Bond for too damn many decades.

“I’ll hold my nose and vote for Blunt”

Therein is the problem. I held my nose and voted for McCain.....and Bond.....and Hulsoff. They have done just enough good to get the nod. But overall they lack the absolute resolve to do the peoples work instead of special interest corrupt money. If it smells bad, clean it up, mop the floor and change the diaper.

If this political picture smells so badly, why can’t we generate a candidate who demonstrates the will of the people???

I am tired of political nepotism and name brand family dynasties making careers out of pumping the people for money and being forgotten when we ask for a place at the table.

One of the key problems is money. By all means work for the candidate you most want. Donate to that candidate. But too frequently candidates that some individual or another most want can't raise enough money to put up a hard media fight. At that point that candidates supporters start whining about how their candidate, “Could do really well if the MSM would only allow them to get their message across”. Or their candidate is behind in the polls because, “The powers that be have already chosen THEIR candidate”. Well ya know what, THE MSM IS NOT GOING TO HELP CONSERVATIVES! EVER! We have to BUY our access to the public!

What it really all comes down to in those cases is a lack of enough appeal to moderate voters (who we need to win) to make them want to vote for a good conservative candidate. Donors are not, by and large going to throw huge sums of money behind a weak candidate.

If Roy Blunt gets the GOP nomination, and that is pretty much a sure thing I'm going to vote for him. Or we can run a slate of weak candidates and make things easier for Obama. Blunt has a lifetime rating of 93.8 from the American Conservative Union. I'll take it.
