What if we could turn all the plastic waste we create on a daily basis into fuel to power our cars? A Washington, DC-based company called Envion claims it can do just that with a process that turns plastic into an oil-like fuel for just $10 per barrel. According to Envion, the resulting fuel can be blended with other components and used as either gasoline or diesel.

$10 a barrel my foot. As long as the “plastic waste” is free maybe. But if you can make fuel from garbage, then pretty soon your gonna have to pay for garbage.
If this works soon companies will compete to buy youe garbage.
So true...
Which is how it should be. You always know which stuff is actually a good idea to recycle because companies will pay for it. Currently plastic is not a good recyclable, if this process works that could change.
I bet it is thermo-depolymerization. Yes, if we can perfect that technology, then the landfills that the enviromentalists scream about can be used to make oil.
But the price of garbage will only go as high as the market will bear in a free market where..... oh, never mind.
Yup. And you can use a combination of chemical and physical processes to sort the trash.
Ashes to ashes, dust to dust, oil to oil? Plastics start out as oil, no reason they can’t be made into oil again, although with certain losses I’m sure.
but don’t those environmentalists hate oil too? lol.
Yes, imagine a company picking up your plastic trash each week and paying YOU by the pound.
They hate everything. With that in mind, they are inconsequential.
That $10/barrel number is probably marginal cost.
probably.
The mindset about landfills is all wrong! We should think of them as long-term raw-materials aggregation sites. When we decide we need something, we can mine the landfills.
Why you gotta go usin’ logic and stuff?
” and paying YOU by the pound.”
Yeah! Riiiight! The goobers will pass a law saying you MUST separate plastics from other waste. You must have a separate bin for plastics. The trash haulers will need separate trucks for plastics. And you garbage disposal costs will go up 50%.
Thats just the way I yam.
that IS more likely I would agree
But, what use would we have for environmentalists? Oh, wait, what use do we have for them now?
