Should the National Endowment for the Arts encourage artists to create art on issues being vehemently debated nationally?
That is the question that I set out to discuss a little over three weeks ago when I wrote an article on Big Hollywood entitled The National Endowment for the Art of Persuasion?”
The question still requires debate but the facts do not.
The NEA and the White House did encourage a handpicked, pro-Obama arts group to address politically controversial issues under contentious national debate. That fact is irrefutable.
But some have claimed that the invite and passages, pulled from the conference call that inspired the article, were taken out of context. Context is what I intend to establish here.
On August 10th, the National Endowment for the Arts, the White House Office of Public Engagement, and the Corporation for National and Community Service hosted a conference call with a handpicked arts group. This arts group played a key role in Obama’s arts effort during his election campaign, as declared by the organizers of the call, and many on the call played a role in the now famous Obama Hope poster.
Much of the talk on the conference call was a build up to what the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) was specifically asking of this group. In the following segment, Buffy Wicks, Deputy Director of the White House Office of Public Engagement, clearly identifies this arts group as a pro-Obama collective and warns them of some “specific asks” that will be delivered later in the meeting.

Being on the campus of UCLA, the demographic was very young. It was the first time I’ve seen a crowd do “the wave’ at a political event. There were homemade signs and banners everywhere, and a bunch of iconic-looking posters, designed by Shepard Fairey, with a roto-scoped drawing of Obama and the word “Hope.” (We snagged one.)
After the pre-program, which featured Susan as well as some California legislative leaders (the two highest-ranking woman in the California Legislature, Asm. Majority Leader Karen Bass and Sen. Majority Leader Gloria Romero, are supporting Obama), Buffy Wicks, a field coordinator with the California campaign, took the stage. They instituted an “adopt-a-precinct program” at the event. Each attendee was given a call script and a sheet with a couple dozen names from the Voter Activation Network (VAN) list, which has been developed over the past couple years as a pretty well-scrubbed voter contact database. I’m not sure that this will result in a ton of calls, and certainly the campaign is relying on other sources than people who showed up to a rally. But it gives the people that attended a sense of investment in the campaign, a chance to do more than show up, to really participate in their democracy. And that’s really an invaluable sense of empowerment.

I cannot stand that woman. She’s arrogant, phony and .....

She has that stupid nervous laugh too that she uses after nearly every sentence even when nothing is funny.
Listen to this video. What’s funny about it is that she talks about meeting Odumbas* and the First Wookie. She says michelle definitely wears the pants. No news there, but interesting to hear her say it. I saved every video I could find since I’m sure they will disappear.

I agree with you 100%. They can’t just report the story, the MUST explain the implications and use examples or this will go right over the heads of the American Idol crowds.
