My EMT teacher was a fire fighter/paramedic. I will never forget this. He had asked all the minorities to raise their hands. He said APPLY to the fire stations. We need minorities, sorry for all the white people. But minorities have a better rate of being hired.

Gotta love affirmitive action...

“Tripped over his sheet.”

Took the words out of my mind.

You’re probably more than right....and to think he actually casts a vote that will alter things in America forever is even more frightening...shame on his home state for keeping him in office!!

What I am having a hard time getting my brain around is that there doesn’t seem to be anyone up there in Washington that will admit this socialist agenda taking over America. Who have you heard up there that says this....I don’t recall anyone. Maybe I’m wrong. Are there any people who want to continue our country as a Republic working for the people? I am so beyond disgusted with ALL of them!

"Tripped over his sheet."

Seriously guys tone it down a bit.

Yeah he is a dimocrat and yeah he has a shady past but at least the guy believes in the rules of the Senate AND the Constitution. If he was in full health right now he would be berating the Democrats for even considering the Nuclear Option for other than it was conceived!

Prayers to him and his family...

Get stuffed. The guy is a former Klansman. As a result, he is no defender of the Constitution. His past is far more than "shady."

If Byrd had his way, we would still have segregation and lynchings. Democratic Sen. Robert Byrd, Ex-Klansman

I never said he wasn't but his record for adhering to the rules in the Senate and the Constitution are better than a goodly number of so called Conservative Repubs.

Byrd is a Democrat and he uses his office to buy votes (hard to drive more than an hour in any direction in West Virginia without running into some bridge or Building with his name on it.

But he does take the rules of the Senate and the role of the senate as far as the Constitution goes very seriously. He is on record as being against the nuclear option for anything other than it was created for.

Besides that the man is most likely dying so you can cowboy up and show us how cool you are by ragging on him but he at least has some moral code, unlike that stinking piece of dung Kennedy who changed the rules to suit his need at the time. (like the issue of his replacement)

Byrd does not roll like that and for that I am grateful.

I never said he wasn't but his record for adhering to the rules in the Senate and the Constitution are better than a goodly number of so called Conservative Repubs.

What the f*ck does that have to do with him being a racist and Klansman? I guess Stalin and Hitler had their good points as well.

But he does take the rules of the Senate and the role of the senate as far as the Constitution goes very seriously.

Agan, irrelevant and really not true.

"The ex-Klansman's admirers praise his historical knowledge, mastery of procedural rules, and outspokenness. They refer to the Senate's senior Democrat as the "conscience of the Senate." They downplay his white-sheet-wearing days as a "brief mistake" -- as if joining the Klan were like knocking over a glass of water. Oopsy."

"This ex-Klansman wasn't just a passive member of the nation's most notorious hate group. According to news accounts and biographical information, Sen. Byrd was a "Kleagle" -- an official recruiter who signed up members for $10 a head. He said he joined because it "offered excitement" and because the Klan was an "effective force" in "promoting traditional American values." Nothing like the thrill of gathering 'round a midnight bonfire, roasting s'mores, tying nooses, and promoting white supremacy with a bunch of your hooded friends.

"The ex-Klansman later filibustered the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act -- supported by a majority of those "mean-spirited" Republicans -- for more than 14 hours. He also opposed the nominations of the Supreme Court's two black justices, liberal Thurgood Marshall and conservative Clarence Thomas. In fact, the ex-Klansman had the gall to accuse Justice Thomas of "injecting racism" into the Senate hearings. Meanwhile, author Graham Smith recently discovered another letter Sen. Byrd wrote after he quit the KKK, this time attacking desegregation of the armed forces.

"The ex-Klansman vowed never to fight "with a Negro by my side. Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds."

Besides that the man is most likely dying so you can cowboy up and show us how cool you are by ragging on him but he at least has some moral code, unlike that stinking piece of dung Kennedy who changed the rules to suit his need at the time. (like the issue of his replacement)L

Listen, you can defend this racist, bigot all you want. Maybe you share his views and "moral code." I don't.

Well, it’s not like he was never there. He was in DC for decades as the Senator from Alabama (he was unusual for the time, more like what we see today of members serving for so long, since many of his contemporaries would serve 6 years or less and go home). Folks in DC at the time considered King and James Buchanan to be, uh, shall we say, virtually husband and wife.

"Listen, you can defend this racist, bigot all you want. Maybe you share his views and "moral code." I don't."

I will defend his actions I agree with, such as adhering to the rules of the Senate even though tossing aside such rules benefits his party, I do not nor have not defended his involvement with the Klan. Is he still a member? people do change you know.

I do not agree with him politically in the least but at least he does adhere to a code few in the Senate do these days and I am referring to folks in both parties.

And I won't dance on someones grave who has at least appeared to have changed his ways especially while he lies dying. (Kennedy on the other hand never changed no matter how they tried to redress the pig.)

You however may continue to show us how its done. Maybe you can fly down to West Virgina to burn a cross on Senator Byrd's front yard to give him a taste of justice. Me I am gonna offer up prayers for his soul and the comfort of his family.

Good Day to you.

The bottom line is you continue to defend him despite his past, including his powerful position within the Klan and subsequent actions while in Congress. You are defending the indefensible.

(Kennedy on the other hand never changed no matter how they tried to redress the pig.)

I guess you never read Kennedy's memoir that came out after he died where he claimed to be sorry for all the sins he committed.

You however may continue to show us how its done. Maybe you can fly down to West Virgina to burn a cross on Senator Byrd's front yard to give him a taste of justice. Me I am gonna offer up prayers for his soul and the comfort of his family.

Burn a cross? Sorry, but that is Byrd's MO. I offer no prayers for his soul and hope that he rots in Hell. It is a disgrace that we have someone like him serving in the Senate.

Please point out the parts wherein I defend his actions and you don't agree with the ones I defend.

Sorry about the late response to your note....I, for one, will be as active as possible in getting rid of these old fools in Washington. I will be looking at voting out anyone that has more than 2 terms in office. But, realistically, in order to deal with the multitudes of socialists in Washington we do need to keep those with experience opposed to that ideolog thinking and voting. The left will try to maintain their numbers. We have to convince the people who vote but don’t read the backgrounds of the candidates that not all candidates are good candidates simply because they have been elected before.
