Tough Political Realities Quiet Youth 'Obamamania'
CBS ^ | 9/22/09 | staff

Young Americans showed their collective power when they helped vote President Obama into office. Inspired by his message of "change," they knocked on doors, spread flyers, voted for him by a 2-1 margin, and partied like rock-the-vote stars when he won.

Since the election, though, that fervor has died down _ noticeably. And while young people remain the president's most loyal supporters in opinion polls, a lot of people are wondering why that age group isn't doing more to build upon their newfound reputation as political influencers.

"It's one thing to get excited about a presidential candidate. It's another thing to become a responsible citizen," says Jennifer Donahue, political director for the New Hampshire Institute Of Politics. She and other political analysts thinks they have yet to prove themselves.

Professors and students themselves also are noticing the quiet on college campuses, which were hotbeds for "Obamamania" during the campaign.

"They're supportive, but in a bystander kind of way," says Laura Katz Olson, a political science professor at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

You can only fake your way through for so long before reality kicks you in the teeth. Ask Jimmuh Carter.

It ain't about reality. It's about a bunch of idiot children with the attention span of six year-olds.

Well I believe many voted for Obama based on his being the first black president in the USA. His color appealed to them more than his politics.

Now many of the smart ones feel they have been duped and many of them are still waiting for their “stuff” to arrive in the mail or in their box of Coco Puffs.

Cause’ their too busy texting each other saying how important they are. The one that are not, now realize what a natural born sneak, cheat and liar Obama is and that they were playing the part of useful idiots.

Because they’re fundamentally lazy. They want want want and want, but they don’t want to pay their dues and move up over time, they want it handed to them NOW. By Mommy and Daddy, or Bambi and Michelle and Harry and Nancy — who cares, frankly, as long as SOMEONE takes care of ‘em.

That’s why ‘Rat-sized Big Government appeals to the little darlings.

At least she’s honest about Obama’s supporters.

They’re staring at the job market, and not liking what they are seeing. Probably staring at the deficit too, and wondering what that will mean as they shuffle out of economics 101.

Short attention span is correct.....what a 18, l9, year old cares about, differs greatly in a few short years.

His youth vote have moved on to the next trend.

Well, I had a real epithet all written up to post, but let me just say that if you have ever come upon someone who was a really, really dangerous type and was sizing you up and down, you’d never forget it. Or, when you see shadows of snakes running up and down a person and just know the guy’s up to no good, you get little hairs standing all over your body.

You kids ain’t seen nothin’ yet from 0bama. Y’all have no internal compass and are goin’ to pay for that. We’ll be tryin’ to stay alive ourselves and might not be able to shield you. Better man up. No more hiding in Mom’s apron strings or Dad’s garage.

"They're supportive, but in a bystander kind of way," says Laura Katz Olson, a political science professor at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania.

Bystanders who, perhaps, are now saying, "Look at this wretchedly smelly crapfest we created. We sure hope we don't have to pay for any of this, 'cuz we weren't thinking that far ahead when we pulled the level for Barry the Boob. We would hate to have the consequences of our ill-considered actions come back to bite us in the collective butt."
