US Senate Republicans bail from interrogation probe

WASHINGTON (AFP) – US Senate Republicans on Friday pulled out of a bipartisan investigation into controversial "war on terror" detentions and interrogations, including tactics widely condemned as torture.

The move by the opposition party dealt a sharp blow to the Senate Intelligence Committee's efforts to find out exactly what methods were used when and whether they paid off -- without prosecuting witnesses or agents thought to have committed abuses.

Senator Kit Bond, the panel's top Republican, blamed Attorney General Eric Holder's investigation into alleged CIA abuse of detainees, which he said made it impossible for current or former CIA officials to work with the committee.

"Had Mr Holder honored the pledge made by the president to look forward not backwards, we would still be active participants in the Committee's review," Bond said in a statement.

The Justice Department "sent a loud and clear message that previous decisions to decline prosecution mean nothing and old criminal charges can be brought anytime against anyone," said the Missouri senator.

"Against these odds, what current or former CIA employee would be willing to gamble his freedom by answering the committee's questions?"

As a result, he said, the committee would be "spinning our wheels" and "cannot complete its review in a reasonable time if witnesses won't talk to us."

Democrat Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, declared: "I very much regret" the decision, but vowed to pursue the panel's efforts.

"That study and investigation is being pursued, additional staff are being hired, and the Committee is continuing the work with all due diligence," she said.

Feinstein said in late August that Holder's investigation was poorly timed, even as former Republican vice president Dick Cheney blasted the probe into possible lawbreaking by CIA agents as "an outrageous political act."

Yep, now that the American people have shown the guts and made it known that this is unacceptable, some Republicans all of a sudden grow some...guts. What a joke, what a collection of clowns and fairies. Screw all of them.

I take the fifth. And I AM in jeopardy for doing my sworn duty as a CIA officer.

Pass the popcorn.

The dems are truly sick puppies.

Democrats are increasingly mentally ill, but I still shake my head in astonishment and ask “What’s wrong with them,” even though I know the answer.

Back in 2001, after 9-11, Osama bin Laden said the Americans don’t have the backbone to fight terrorism. He was kind of right, the DEMOCRATS don’t have the backbone to fight. Conservatives would have blown him and his ilk off the face of the planet. When we are attacked again, it will be on the DEMOCRATS watch, then, they’ll blame Bush. The DEMOCRATS are a pathetic, traitorous bunch of slimy snakes, intent only on lining their pockets and pretending they have power. LOL, the people are letting them know; WE HAVE THE POWER. It would have been simple on 9-12 to take over the government. That was just the start. Soon the people will “tar and feather” these socialists and run them out. DEMOCRATS don’t care about our country, they care about their next cocktail party. We are watching, and WE WILL ACT.

++++++++++++++++

I understand your disdain at Jonny come lately Republicans growing a set. But at some point, we’re going to need some public officials to help us with this fight - right?

We need to support Conservative Republicans - or do you disagree? Perhaps you do, but that’s my view..

Guts or political necessity?

This month’s terror scares may have contributed to their reluctance to partake in the theatrics.

A little inconsistent, here. Maybe we should be glad they finally grew some "guts."

What a bunch of hyperbolic, hyperventilating commies. Three people were water-boarded and we got great intel from them. And the point is that Bond and and the others made an impact on a three-ring circus of a witch hunt of stand-up employees who did as they were told and were told they had the backing of the government.

It’s more tortuous to read their comments than to be water-boarded.

And Eric Holder is a slimy, filthy little pissant who, as a minority, hates this country and intends to selectively prosecute whote people and white business owners with civil rights suits en masse. He, himself, as much as said so.

Note the spin in that sentence.

GOOD! Let the RATs go it alone.
It'll be seen for the phony political witch hunt it it. And Holder better get ready for some of his own medicine in 2010 when the GOP takes the House back.

[He may as well move his office to the basement of the House as that's where he'll be spending all his time - testifying!]

I agree, but it’s really hard to support THIS group of Republican lawmakers. There’s no leadership there, no guts, no fire, no nothing. We have had to do their jobs for them.
