President Obama wants kids to spend more time in school. Students in the U.S. need more class time to remain competitive with students around the world, the President said. Obama advocates schools adding time to classes, extending hours into evenings and weekends, and shortening summer vacation.
"Now, I know longer school days and school years are not wildly popular ideas, not with Malia and Sasha, not in my family, probably not in yours. But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom," Obama said.
Some schools that extended their hours have seen positive results. Early results from Massachusetts' expanded learning time initiative, which adds extra time to the school year, show that some students involved in the program do better on state tests than those at regular public schools.
This should go a long way to helping the economy by cutting into summer vacations and tourism. I know that a lot of “teachers” want more opportunities to “hit” on the kids but this is getting ridiculous.

Obama doesn’t give a sh*t about children being educated (like they are getting educated at most government schools, anyway).
Longer school hours are a ruse for a taxpayer-paid child care and babysitting service. (Oh, and more Obama sing-a-longs).
No. It will result in more FTEs to the school systems increasing their power. It will also result in increased taxes at the local and state levels for education. It will not improve results because the same people will be involved in the same system turning out the same results. Finally, it will usurp local authorities and school boards by injecting more federal government and unions in the schools.
Bad idea all the way around. The problems with the schools are not related to quantity they are related to quality.
I couldn’t disagree more. And if you agree with Obama, perhaps DU would be a better fit.

Under what constitutional authority does DC control school systems?
That is a State Issue. The entire Education Department in DC should be abolished.
Why do home school children perform so much better academically? Answer: Lack of Brainwashing with lies.
It is the time to Downsize DC.
Did you plow the back forty? Did you love the break? I will go up against anyone in the workplace that supports that bullshit. Summer is a time for family to relax.
What they "need" is a genuine education, professionally instructed by educated, dedicated instructors --- NOT substandard, illiterate, union lackeys who spend time indoctrinating their pawns, expecting many to fail instead of succeed.
Worst of all, more than a few of those who are charged with fulfilling their role of actually educating their charges are sex-addicted drug addicts who are preying on these innocents left in their charge.
And "free" babysitting for the Obama communities.
So what will private schools do? Don’t think they’ll go along with this crap. I’m with those who think kids and families need a break.
Kids don’t have 3 months off in the summer, more like 2 months.
For my family, we spend 1 week at my parents house visiting them (only time we see them all year). We go on a family vacation for a week. My kids either go to Vacation Bible School or help at one (depending on their age).
Then, my kids have a month long drama camp that they attend for 3 hours a day.
We all love summer. There’s no homework. My kids love to read, and they actually have time to read. We have a pool, so we go swimming a lot, and we have lots of bar-b-ques.
One of my daughters is special needs, and she just needs down time to decompress from school. She attends speech therapy more in the summer because that is her biggest issue, and she doesn’t have time to go much during the school year.
I wish the kids had more time in the summer. I wish they had from Memorial Day to Labor Day off. I love being with my kids.
More time with socialist teachers an less with patriotic parents maybe ?
Sorry we need the long vacation to deprogram the little rascals.
