Just read on one of the many posted links that New Zealand is now under a tsunami warning (as well as several other islands) and I’m wondering if it’s like the watches/warnings we get in Florida for hurricanes etc. A watch means- be on the lookout- you’re in the cone of possibility- a warning means- it’s coming for you. Do you know if it’s the same for tsunamis?

They’re done filming. They always finish filming several weeks before they start the show. Survivor 20 is being filmed in Samoa too, but they filmed that one right after the current season, so they’re done with that one also.

It means that the quake was big enough to generate a significant Tsunami. It doesn’t mean that it did. Only that it could. So they err on the side of caution. It was only 20 miles down, which is both shallow and fairly deep at the same time.

Yes, a watch means heads up. Warning - Head for the hills! Thank goodness I live up high. Hawaii is actually overdue for a tsunami. We haven’t had one since I was a kid.

Re:

At those distances shown, 600 MPH seems about right.

If red X above, go to http://wcatwc.arh.noaa.gov/2009/09/29/424649/01/ttvu424649-01.jpg

Fox News is right now saying a wave swept in about 100 yards in American Samoa. No major damage reported.

Thanks- and I don’t remember if it’s the deep or the shallow ones most likely to generate tsunamis...but shallow makes more sense..

Shallow ones. When the sea floor gets lifted that is when you get a tsunami. Or lowered as well. Its the change in equilibrium that does it.
