An heiress has told how she was raped three or four times a day for nine months after being abducted by a preacher.

Elizabeth Smart, 21, said she was kidnapped by Brian Mitchell at the age of 14 from her bedroom in the middle of the night.

He kept her tied up and threatened to kill her if she tried to escape back to her wealthy Mormon family.

Abducted: Elizabeth Smart, now 21, claims she was raped four times a day and tied with a cable by 'prophet' Brian David Mitchell, right [Pics in URL] The full horror of her ordeal emerged as she gave evidence for the first time in a case which has transfixed America.

Miss Smart, the student daughter of a millionaire estate agent, was in the witness box for nearly two hours but remained poised, her voice never wavering.

She did not have to see Mitchell as the 55-year- old had been removed from the courtroom in Salt Lake City, Utah, for disrupting proceedings by singing hymns.

The federal court is hearing the case to rule if Mitchell, who describes himself as a prophet, is mentally competent to stand trial.

The former street preacher has been behind bars since 2003, mostly in a mental hospital, but has twice been ruled unfit to stand trial.

When asked to describe him, Miss Smart said he was: 'Evil, wicked, manipulative, stinky, slimy, greedy, selfish, not spiritual, not religious, not close to God.'

Hearing: Ed Smart, Elizabeth's father, speaks outside court. Judges will decide whether Mitchell is fit to stand trial for kidnap and sexual assault

She told how within hours of being abducted...

First time I’ve ever heard Elizabeth Smart referred to as an “heiress.”

He was a Mormon that went crazy, it happens.

The Catholic church does not accept them as Christian, so they aren’t.

I’m a Catholic and the Catholic Church certainly has those who have gone crazy as well.... as to whether the Mormons are considered “Christian” by Catholics - I don’t know... perhaps it only matters if they are considered “Christian” by Christ.

As Catholics, we are allowed to judge institutions such as the Mormon faith. We are forbidden, however, from judging the eternal destination of individuals. There are no doubt many Mormons who are saved by Christ and who will be in Heaven with Him. The Mormon faith itself, however, is a non-Christian religion.

This thread is based upon a news story about Elizabeth Smart and the rapist who kidnapped her, not a story on the Mormon religion.

Then you have a lot in common with Mormons, because you are also not a Christian either.

I think that he was a Mormon Priest that went crazy.

It means do you depend upon men for your salvation or Christ.

In your head I am not a Christian yet you don’t know anything about me, you aren’t a good representative for what ever non-Christian faith you belong to.

You are a liar.

Oh, I thought it might have something to do with Catholicism, because all of the major Christian churches whether Protestant, Greek Orthodox or Catholic are all in agreement that Mormons are not Christians, so it isn't just the Pope and the Catholic Church.

"The Catholic church does not accept them as Christian, so they aren’t."

Welcome back to the 14th century. Always love the Catholics because they can remind us that people need to be tortured to conversion...it's for their own good.

Go Inquisition!!!!! Wonderful institution interrupted by rationality.

I’m sure you’ll reap your rewards...

It’s funny how this discussion has quickly devolved into a battle-royale of the various sects of Christianity and alleged Un-Christian faiths.

Catholics tend to be despised by a good number of protestants and vice-versa and many protestants and Catholics alike cast out Mormons like distant diseased relatives.

What do I believe? Well, What do you believe? It’s really not the subject. The subject is the kidnapping and perverted crimes committed by a piece of human filth against a person, whom regardless of faith, I regard as an innocent human being.

Let’s try to stick with that at least for this thread.

Thanks!

"The Catholic church does not accept them as Christian, so they aren’t." Don't get me started. The catholic church doesn't accept anyone as christian but themselves. That is BY DEFINITION. I like to KEEP THE CATHOLIC-PROTESTANT ISSUE OFF FR. We are on the same side in so many issues. Statements such as the above are going to get a flame war started very quickly. My teeth are gritted. There is much I could type here.

Christianity has common views on the Mormon religion, are we supposed to pretend that we don’t know that?
