Leno Bashes Letterman: I've Never Had Sex With a Staff Member By Noel Sheppard Created 2009-10-03 12:24

Jay Leno went after his former late night rival on Friday using some of his opening monologue to poke fun at David Letterman's recently disclosed sexual escapades with staffers.

As Friday's program began, Leno quipped, "If you came here tonight for sex with a talk-show host, you’ve got the wrong studio."

But that was only the beginning (video embedded below the fold with transcript, h/t Mediaite [1]):

If you came here tonight for sex with a talk-show host, you've got the wrong studio. Alright? So. Boy, what is going on? Boy, first, Conan hit his head, then somebody tries to extort money from Letterman. I'm so glad I'm out of late night. Oh. You know, I want to say I myself was once the victim of an extortion plot. How do you think NBC got me to do a 10:00 show? That's why I'm here. I am happy to say I have never had a sexual relationship with any of my staff members.

Nice.

Leno has been married to the same woman for 30 years and there is never any sexual scandal about him. As show business people go, he is very much a moderate. He had Rush Limbaugh on recently and talked about his (Leno’s) support for the capitalist system. He routinely makes fun of the civic ignorance of the people in the street in his “Jaywalking” series. Give the guy a break.

Something tells me Dave won't be able to make a comeback by having Roman Polansky come on his show ...

What Dave didn't get is that you can be a creepy young guy and be a success in show business, but when you get to be a creepy old guy, it's over.

... it certainly isn’t against the law to have relations with people in your employ. If both parties were willing

It is definitely a thing that puts the subordinate's job in jeopardy when the inevitable break-up comes along; it also has been cited in many sexual harassment cases as something that creates a "hostile work environment" for the other workers, who feel that they have to compete with an immoral situation to get the boss's favor.

I wasn’t, except for last few years, but my siblings and I sneaked into the hallway to watch TV (mainly Charlie’s Angels, we weren’t allowed to watch that. Or soap operas. Or much of anything, for that matter).

Leading up to the election in 2008 you didn;t have to watch his monologue. It was Bush stupid, John McCain old, and Larry Craig is a fag. Day after day after day.............

I agree. I think I could sit down and have dinner with Leno, and I wouldn’t want to kill him by the end of the evening. :)

That Craig Ferguson (sp) is hysterical. I like British humor, though. But he’s on too late for me.

I agree on both counts.
Craig is hilarious ... but he's on too late. I've caught in on an occasional Friday night, or a holiday/vacation - and he's always very funny.

Thank you for the correction. My, isn’t our government concerned with our well being. I’m sure it was because the women’s groups wanted to make sure bosses didn’t abuse their employees. All well and good. It still prevents two people who find each other attractive from doing what comes naturally. It also sets up a situation where two people going in by choice, could turn upside down when one gets angry about a breakup.

The other side of the coin is “creation of a hostile work environement.” When the boss sleeps with one of his subordinates, it sends the message to all the other women working there that they way to get ahead is to sleep with the boss (in other words if you don’t sleep with the boss your job will suffer.)

All of the women that didn’t sleep with Letterman can also sue him for “creating a hostile work environment.”

The reason is: IT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS.

People don’t have kids for a lot of reasons (including physical ones, not everybody is physically able to have kids, some women have physical conditions that would make it dangerous to get pregnant.)

Whatever the Lenos’ reason (physical or otherwise) it’s not anyone’s business but their own.

I apologize if that seemed like an attempt to correct you. I didn’t mean it that way.

It was an observation.

While I do understand where you are coming from, does it ever occur to anyone that bosses are citizens and have the same rights as anyone else. Just because you’re a boss, you shouldn’t have to relinquish your freedom to associate as you wish.

This same argument could be made concerning the boss’ relationship with any employee on any level. The perception of favoritism is only slightly less plentiful than the supply of oxygen. It always exists. And frankly, why shouldn’t the boss have favorites?

Some employees are exceptional and communicate well with the boss. Others are not exceptional and fume and complain. There are going to be different levels of compatibility. If we don’t like that, we are free to find employment elsewhere.

How many times have you seen one person complain about favorites, only to see a management change which saw them become the favorite, and all of a sudden favorites was not a problem any longer?

Such is life...
