BY JENNIFER MEDINA
NEW YORK TIMES

NEW YORK — There shall be no cupcakes. No chocolate cake and no carrot cake. According to New York City's latest regulations, not even zucchini bread makes the cut.

Trying to limit how much sugar and fat students put in their bellies at school, the Education Department has effectively banned most bake sales, the lucrative if not quite healthy fundraising tool for generations of teams and clubs.

The change is part of a new wellness policy...

While many people responding have pointed out that schools are allocating less time for recess, I wonder if another reason for the obesity “epidemic” is that kids are not allowed to have sweet treats; everything they’re allowed to eat has to be “healthy” (i.e. boring). As a result, they don’t learn how to eat in moderation; when they have a chance to eat sweets or other “unhealthy” food, they tend to gorge.

Moderation is the key. Telling them they can’t have certain (really tasty) food EVER does not teach them moderation.

That’s what I was thinking. Nothing wrong with holding a bake sale, buying cupcakes and everyone in the family allowed to have one after dinner. I make homemade cookies every week, alternating everyone’s favorite kind. My sons are now 17 and 21 and both are fit and healthy. There shouldn’t be any ‘bad’ kinds of food, just those you eat a little of.

Whatever you do, don’t send your kid to school with a peanut butter and jelly sandwich- they can KILL!

I don’t remember any kids dropping dead in the lunchroom when I was in grade school (the early 50’s)...

The song mentions Euell Gibbons, poster boy for PROPER eating and healthy living. ‘Did endorsements for Grape Nuts and such.

Dead, I believe.

Sigh...
