Four arrested in brutal murder of NH mom
The Union Leader ^ | 10/6/2009 | Kathryn Marchocki

Posted on 10/06/2009 7:02:12 AM PDT by Andy'smom

Four local young men are under arrest in connection with the violent stabbing death of a Mont Vernon mother and the vicious attack on her daughter.

Steven Spader, 18, Christopher Gribble, 19, both of Brookline, William Marks, 18 and Quinn Glover, 17, both of Amherst, will be arraigned late this morning in Milford District Court, according to the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office.

Spader and Gribble are charged with first degree murder in the death of Kimberly Cates, 42, and attempted murder in the attack on her 11-year-old daughter. Marks and Glover are charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and armed robbery.

Cates' body was found Oct. 4 inside her 4 Trow Road home. Her 11-year-old daughter was alive but severely injured when police arrived at the family's ranch-style home, one of four houses on a dirt road.

"She had a number of very serious injuries that required extensive surgery," Senior Assistant Attorney General N. William Delker said. He wouldn’t disclose the nature of the girl’s injuries, but said she was in stable condition in the intensive care unit at Children's Hospital in Boston.

Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Jennifer Duval performed an autopsy Monday on the body of Kimberly Cates which determined the registered nurse, who worked part-time at area hospitals, died from multiple sharp injuries to the head, torso, left arm and left leg. Her death was ruled a homicide.

On Monday, Delker said police don’t know the motive for the crime — the first known murder in Mont Vernon in at least two generations.

But he said police made progress yesterday tracking down potential leads and questioning several individuals.

"We are in the process of talking to a number of people," Delker said. He would not say if those being questioned are witnesses or suspects.

The father detailed in the Union Leader article is an idiot. Samples...

About 11 p.m., the group had left because his son had to take his girlfriend home to Milford, about a 10-minute drive. When he did not return within a half-hour, Marks said he began repeatedly texting him. The teenager finally answered his father about 4 a.m., saying he was on his way home. When he arrived home, Marks said nothing to his father about the murder.

Is this how it is nowadays? Parent allow teens to live with them and not come home until 4am? Of coursr giving them phones with unlimited texting--which they ignore.

His son, a senior at Souhegan High School, had never been in "substantial trouble" until last April, the father said, when he began hanging around with Spader. Marks was not impressed with his son's new friend. Spader had an inked swastika drawn on his forehead the first time Marks met him. "He probably didn't know what it meant," he said. "He started to portray himself as a gang leader and my son got caught up with it."

Don't you love how the father excuses his son's new sociopath "friend" with the swastika. He didn't know! What a dope!

According to the father: "Spader had an inked swastika drawn on his forehead the first time Marks met him"

I suspect the kid is pathological, as you say, and is a "Charles Manson" wannabe. Manson too had a swastika tatooed on his forehead...........

I live in Amherst, NH and this is huge news around here.
Two of these punks went to the High School in my town.
Mont Vernon is a very rural town(pop. approx 2500). These are reletively affluant communities. METH is not a problem around here like it is out west. However, heroine is becoming more common.

The last murder we had in our area was a typical domestic violence type. Husband kills wife. That was 10+ years ago.

These are towns where people DO NOT LOCK their doors at night. We leave our keys in the ignition of our cars with the doors unlocked. Crime is nonexhistent around here.

I hope you’re right, but what are the chances of teenagers being charged with the death penalty?

They are apparently all adults, even if their relative culpability is unclear. It may be that one will be charged with first-degree murder, and others with second-degree or attempted murder, or as accessories. Obviously, we don’t know the facts yet. I would expect any conviction for 1st degree murder to result in a minimum of a life sentence without parole, given the likely nature of the crime.

Why that house? Has there been any talk about a connection between the suspects and the family?

Supreme court will hear the argument about juveniles being to no parol life sentences in this term.

Were this my family, they would have to pray for a life sentence because when they got out, I would commute the parol to death by lethal injection of buck shot.

According to local(WMUR) news press conference it was just a random act. They went in with the intent to rob them.
This is just breaking news.
Two are charged with murder because they went in with a knife and a machette.

With all these leftists around? Not much. The creep who murdered a Manchester cop a couple of years back was sentenced to death, but the left is already trying to reduce that penalty to 'life'.

So sad that such a horrendous crime could happen in such an idyllic place.

Idyllic? Not any more... :-(

4 Teens Arraigned In Mont Vernon Killing
Autopsy Results Released On Kimberly Cates
POSTED: 7:01 am EDT October 6, 2009
UPDATED: 12:08 pm EDT October 6, 2009

MONT VERNON, N.H. — Prosecutors said Tuesday that two teens arrested in connection with the death of a Mont Vernon woman used a knife and machete to kill her and seriously injure her daughter.

Christopher Gribble

Steven Spader, Christopher Gribble, William Marks and Quinn Glover were arraigned Tuesday at Milford District Court in connection with the death of Kimberly Cates and injuries to her 11-year-old daughter.

In court, investigators said they believe Spader, 17, drove the other three to the house with the intent to rob it. Officials said Spader was armed with a machete and Gribble, 19, was armed with a knife.

Steven Spader

Spader is accused of hitting Cates with the machete, while Gribble is accused of stabbing her with a knife. Investigators said Spader also struck the girl with the machete.

Senior Assistant Attorney General Will Delker said Cates’ home was chosen because it was on an isolated road. He said that Cates was stabbed to death in her bed, while her daughter was seriously injured and had to undergo surgery.

William Marks

Spader and Gribble were charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder in connection with the attack on the girl, and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Marks, 18, and Glover, 17, were charged with burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary and armed robbery.

Quinn Glover

The four stood silently during their separate arraignments, speaking only to enter not guilty pleas to possession of marijuana charges or, in the case of Spader and Marks, to state they would seek a court-appointed lawyer.

No pleas on the felonies were entered for any of the teens, pending a probable cause hearing on Oct. 20. No bail was allowed for Spader and Gribble. The state requested $500,000 bail for Marks and Glover.

An autopsy was performed on Cates by Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Jennie Duval on Monday. Duval determined that the cause of death was multiple sharp injuries to the head, torso, left arm, and left leg. She concluded that the death was a homicide.

The New Hampshire State Police Major Crime Unit, in conjunction with the Mont Vernon, Milford, and other area police departments, are continuing to investigate the circumstances of the crimes.

School officials in the Brookline/Hollis district said Spader dropped out of school last year and got his degree. Officials believe Gribble was home-schooled because he was not a student in the district.

I lived in Boston in the 70-80s. The first mountain to climb in the fall was Mt. Monadnock. Then it was on to skiing. I loved going to New Hampshire on the weekends. Sigh. So sad to hear it's caught up with the rest of the country and not in a good way.
