SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Legal Newsline)-Frivolous lawsuits filed by the nation's trial lawyers are a drain on the economy, former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III said Thursday night.

Meese, who served in Ronald Reagan's California gubernatorial and U.S. presidential administrations, said lawsuit abuse is a "silent drain on the economy" and "a stealth threat to businesses and consumers."

...not to mention adding about 80% overhead to doctor bills, insurance costs, and most everything associated with health care.

How the Demo-rats can even think of Health Care reform without Tort reform shows how out of touch these idiots are with the real world!

The swing in California over the last twenty years has definitely been toward civil defendants. California has had medical malpractice reform for thirty years and the cap on pain and suffering of $250,000 was enacted back then and has never been adjusted upward. A solid 16 years of Republican governors (Duke and Wilson) assured the appointment of conservative judges. Of course, the last decade has been different with Davis and Arnold, but the impact of their appointments won’t really be felt for a while. I think Mr. Meese ought to go back to investigating porn and take his tort reform travelling tour to a state that needs it.

It continues to amaze me how this is ignored by the MSM.

Even Rush ignors this subject.

When you send good jobs that actually produce things overseas more and more people take up professions that leech off our economy. Trial lawyers are one. Wall Street is another. All those mortgage brokers and real estate agents of the bubble years were another

Not to mention the parasites in all levels of government with the Federales in DC being the worst. Top parasite being 0bama with Barney Frank packing up his rear and Pelosi, Harry Reid and Janet Napolitano and Chris Dodd and Jamie Gorelick. Hillary is an uber parasite. None of these leeches do anything useful except to pacify the rabble letting them think someone is in charge

Police firefighters and military are useful. Most of the other gubbermint drones could be done away with and no one would notice or care. How about OSHA EPA EEOC? Purely parasitic but provides great $100000 plus jobs to AA lard asses and other leeches

Not exactly out of touch, so much as arrogant grifters who know what side their bread’s buttered on, i.e., the ABA.

There’s still more that can be done. For example, there is the ADA Mafia. Handicapped people and lawyers travel throughout the state sueing businesses for not having access for disabled people. It’s a real racket.

The threat of a lawsuit.

Milburn Drysdale: I thought so, too. Fortunately, a cold shower brought me to my senses.

I agree, however there is one point you should keep in mind if we get gov't care forced on us.

It will reduce malpractice awards. The reason is that a good portion of those malpractice awards are for future care. This is why the family of someone killed gets a couple hundred thousand dollars and the family of invalid(by malpractice) gets X number of millions.

The cost of future care under a gov't mandate is the same for an invalid as it is for a healthy person. There is no basis to award millions if there is no additional future costs.
