Mark Steyn: Nobel Tops 'SNL' for Obama Joke
ocregister.com ^ | October 9, 2009 | Mark Steyn

Posted on 10/09/2009 6:03:13 PM PDT by kellynla

The most popular headline at the Real Clear Politics Web site the other day was: "Is Obama Becoming A Joke?" With brilliant comedic timing, the very next morning the Norwegians gave him the Nobel Peace Prize. Up next: His stunning victory in this year's Miss World contest. Dec. 12, Johannesburg. You read it here first.

For what, exactly, did he win the Nobel? As the president himself put it:

"When you look at my record, it's very clear what I have done so far. And that is nothing. Almost one year and nothing to show for it. You don't believe me? You think I'm making it up? Take a look at this checklist."

And up popped his record of accomplishment, reassuringly blank.

Oh, no, wait. That wasn't the real President Barack Obama. That was a comedian playing President Obama on "Saturday Night Live." And, for impressionable types who find it hard to tell the difference, CNN – in a broadcast first that should surely have its own category at the Emmys – performed an in-depth "reality check" of the SNL sketch. That's right: They fact-checked the jokes. Seriously. "How much truth is behind all the laughs? Stand by for our reality check," promised Wolf Blitzer, introducing his in-depth report with all the plonking earnestness so cherished by those hapless Americans stuck at Gate 73 for four hours with nothing to watch but the CNN airport channel. Given the network's ever more exhaustive absence of viewers among the non-flight-delayed demographic, perhaps Wolf could make it a regular series:

Who was that lady I saw you with last night?

That was no lady, that was my wife

Elizabeth Dole probably sold it to her after losing the Senate seat.

Ah yes. The woman the great Florence King [Steyn's only real competition among contemporary print commentators] referred to as the dreaded E. Dole-i. Glad to be shut of her, even if she represents what our Party Luminaries assure us is the only electable breed of Republican -- oddly -- with no irony whatsoever. Now if only her apparently demented husband could disappear from the political scene.

If the sentence has any meaning, one wonders if the intellectually hapless Miz Judi Romaine would've been capable of rendering it during the previous administration, when malignancy was the rule, and workable discourses were hardly the rage among leftist pundits...

I think they must be on to you. I tried to enter Obama’s name and then click Vote Now, and the site is not responding.

He REALLY deserves an Emmy for Best Unwavering Two-Screen Teleprompter Eye Contact.

If he has any dignity, he HAS to be embarrassed by this ‘prize’ of his. My old contention used to be ‘’He’d make a great fraternity prez, but no where close to being grown up enough to be POTUS.’’

I take it back about him being a great frat prez. I’m sooo embarrassed I once thought that.

Steyn always has a line or two (or several) in each column that just plain crack me up. This one is a hoot! I admire his way with words.

I wrote in Barry Soetero because it’s the last name for which we’ve seen legal proof of name.

I love Florence King. It would be nice if the Doles decided to have a *private* life, and leave the rest of us alone!

You had me worried. I was not familiar with “ROTFLMPO”. I’m much relieved. Just don’t turn on your Web cam.
