Hutchison campaigns for gun rights

PFLUGERVILLE, Texas — Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison went to a shooting range Friday to remind voters of her support for gun rights by pointing out her plans to weigh in on an upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case.

With gunfire popping in the background, Hutchison said she will help lead a bipartisan group from Congress in filing a legal brief urging the court to rule gun ownership is an individual right that applies at the state and local levels, in addition to the federal level.

Both Hutchison and Gov. Rick Perry, who are squaring off in the March Republican primary, say they support gun ownership rights, something dear to Texas GOP primary voters. Representatives of both candidates say they own rifles and handguns and that they are hunters.

Perry's spokesman, Mark Miner, said the governor has a Texas license to carry a concealed handgun. The senator's spokeswoman, Jennifer Baker, said Hutchison does not.

Miner said the governor has always been a strong defender of the Second Amendment, which addresses the right to bear arms.

Former Georgetown Mayor Leo Wood introduced Hutchison as a defender of the Second Amendment and the National Rifle Association.

Hutchison, starting her remarks in the gun shop at Red's Indoor Range, said, "I wish I could shoot, but it is raining ... I'm very pleased to be able to look at all these beautiful guns here."

Miner said Perry, also an NRA backer, supported the legislation allowing Texans to carry concealed handguns and in 2007 signed the state's so-called castle doctrine law allowing individuals more legal rights to shoot to kill if someone breaks into their home, car or business. It was the first bill Perry signed into law that year.

Perry also signed a law in 2007 closing off public access to records showing who has

There must be something here that I just don’t get (not that I have really been much attention). Why is this woman doing this?

My goodness, conservatism is pulling Republicans right.

Who woulda thunk it? Maybe Ronald Reagan and Sarah Palin.

Question is, Who plans to remain to the right AFTER the election?

Because supporting 2A is part of the litmus test for Texas politicians. Supporting the castle doctrine in a way that is consistent with the ability to protect yourself and your family is another part of the test. Perry has done very well in this regard for Texans and Kay has to catch up.

You flunk this test and you can kiss your political career goodbye.

2A is non-negotiable in Texas.

Red's Indoor Range, said, "I wish I could shoot, but it is raining .."

It was raining inside the indoor range? I'm not buying her excuse.

I think her & Perry should have a competition. I want to see their groups. Okay, I wouldn't vote for her even if she was better at target practice beause she's pro-abortion.

Nothing. In fact, she added an amendment to a senate bill that essentially destroyed any and all funding for border fence resources (financial, staffing, security equipment, infrastructure, etc.) One could make the argument that she is responsible for a significant portion of the state’s costs to provide healthcare to illegals.

She's trying to win an election.

Nothing more.

My change from a long time KBH supporter to “what the hell is she doing?”, my suspecisions really start to come up when both the Dallas Mourning News and Houston LibCron has selected her. Without a doubt both lib rags know that the limpassed dems ain’t got a snowballs chance so they are pushing the “more liberal” Repub.

Kay Bailey is in the wrong camp trying to out 2nd Amendment Gov. Goodhair. She would do better to reconsider her leftward leanings and stay in the Senate.

Ronald Reagan’s “big tent”???? I almost hurled. I don’t believe her for a minute. She should be happy with the job she has and just shut up.
Not that it’s any of my bidness.
