If the president is obstructing the democratic process and opposing the decision of parliament as well as the will of the people, he is moving beyond the law and will need to face the consequences, a German diplomat told The Sunday Times.
Jiri Oberfalzer, a member of the Czech senate and Klauss closest ally, said Nicolas Sarkozy, the French president, had already threatened the Czechs with expulsion from the EU.
Ideas of changing the constitution just to get rid of the president only shows how weak our young democracy is, said Oberfalzer, a Eurosceptic.
The political hot potato now lands in the hands of the caretaker government of Jan Fischer, the prime minister.
Under the Czech constitution a president can be impeached only if he commits high treason against the countrys independence or its territorial integrity and democratic order. It is highly unlikely that parliament would pass such a measure under Fischers interim government.
There are other hurdles. The treaty has been approved by the Czech parliament but senators loyal to Klaus have lodged three challenges with the constitutional court, which has rejected two and is widely expected to follow suit with the third.
Opponents of the treaty hope that Klaus will be able to stall ratification until the British general election in May. David Cameron, the Tory leader, has promised a referendum if his party wins and the treaty is still unsigned.

I remember this movie from somewhere.
Klaus is awesome. Shame on the Germans - fools.
A bridge too far?
Gee, you're right...wait...didn't a man named Chamberlain have a bit part?
Something like that
Hold until releaved comes to mind.
Next they will say the Polish are too irresponsible to govern themselves and need their help.
SINCE WHEN is taking over the sovereignty of a country by unelected elitist thuggery a democratic process?
I don’t see who the Germans are/is?
What kind of standard is this?
Our democracy is over 200 years old, but we now ignore the constitution to allow an inelligible man to be president.
Democracy is always weak, and must always be fought for.
Klaus is also a “Climate Denier”, giving them even more reason to get rid of him.
There is nothing democratic about the European Union treaty and if the Obamaites get their way there will be nothing democratic about our own system of government eithet. I am convinced that he was imposed on us by our elites, who wish to run our lives the way that European elites run the lives of their peoples, who seem more and more like a proletariat.
“I am convinced that he was imposed on us by our elites, who wish to run our lives the way that European elites run the lives of their peoples, who seem more and more like a proletariat....”
... And the systematic destruction of Christianity and the traditional family by the same is for the purpose of nullifying a source of competitive allegiance.
Remember they were much more forgiving of Saddam. Of course, it reminded them of the time when outsiders interfered with their dictator.
Read the article by Dick Morris why Hussein received the Nobel Peace Price. It does explain a lot. You can Google it, look for Dick Morris.
That is exactly what the Lisbon Treaty does. The EU Constitution was voted down, so they strip out a national anthem, move a deck chair here and there, and out comes a treaty.
Now both will allow the EU to be run by unelected, unaccountable politicians. As I said on another thread, sort of like having the President, Senate and House elect themselves and you little people zip your lips and obey.
The difference is that a Constitution required quite a few votes of the people whereas a treaty only needs to be confirmed by the same people that will benefit from it.
No conflict of interest there! s/
That would be the best thing that could happen to the Czech Republic.
Under the Czech constitution a president can be impeached only if he commits high treason against the countrys independence or its territorial integrity and democratic order.
President Klaus is doing the exact opposite. It sounds like he is standing by his country's constitution and protecting its sovereignty. He's the best hope for stalling for time against this horrible abomination. Three cheers for President Klaus!
Is Klaus the guy who said man made global warming is a hoax?
Colonists!
