Iran threatened by U.S. buster bomb
Space War ^ | 10/08/2009 | Staff Writers

The Pentagon has acknowledged that it is speeding up plans to deploy a massive bomb capable of knocking out deeply buried enemy facilities. The giant "bunker buster" is believed to add fighting power to the U.S. arsenal against Iran's nuclear program, defense experts argue.

U.S. officials, however, have refused to confirm the connection.

The 30,000-pound massive ordnance penetrator is capable of penetrating up to 60 meters of earth, or a thick layer of concrete, before exploding. It weighs more than 13 metric tons, allowing just one such bunker buster to be carried by U.S. bomber aircraft.

"It is under development right now and should be deployable in the coming months," press secretary Geoff Morrell was quoted saying in a report by Defense News.

U.S. Pentagon officials said they had asked Congress in August to redirect $52 million in funding to the project in order to speed up production of the massive bomb.

After winning congressional approval, the Pentagon said this week that it had awarded Boeing's McDonnell Douglas a $51.9 million contract to "enable B-2 aircraft" to carry the bomb.

"The threats have been developing over the years," a Pentagon spokesman was quoted saying to U.S. media. "There are, without getting into any intelligence, there are countries that have used technologies to go further underground and to take those facilities and make them hardened. This is not a new phenomenon, but it is a growing one."

He said the first of the bombs would be ready by the middle of 2010.

I've always preffered "Rods from God", space baced kinetic bombardment. Telephone poll sized tungsten rods that are dropped from space and thanks to GPS guidence and good old F=MV2 slam into an installation with kiloton level damage focused in a small area.

Actually, the impact kinetic energy of such a weapon (essentially an artificial meteor) would be calculated as EK=mv2/2.

I’m reminded just a bit of the development of the GBU-28 for the First Gulf War. It took all of about six weeks to build a bomb that could penetrate the hardened Iraqi command bunkers. IIRC, they use the barrels from old 8-inch SP howitzers for the bomb casing.

I have to admit, I'm confused. I think Obamy has already told Israel that they are on their own. Is he going to wait for a mushroom cloud and then send the bunker buster? Is this just talk?

If it were me, in order to do my best to avoid a war, I would tell the world that Israel will have American backing for whatever they need. I think that may make Iran at least know they have NO chance of survival if they don't stop what they are doing.

Weakness will guarantee a war.

America has the Iranian despotic régime surrounded on three fronts, our Navy in the Persian Gulf coupled with the U.S. Air Force & troops on either side of Iran, in Afghanistan & Iraq. The paramount problem is the appeasing thing in the White House & cohort leftist, elitist, agenda-driven Dems in Congress.

When Israel is forced to preemptively protect herself from Iran's Russian supplied nuclear weapons threats of mass extermination, it's alarmingly clear whose side the despicable White House creature shall favour (America's & Israel's enemies).

I've long wondered if such concept is possible when delivered by a ballistic missile? My understanding is it is possible from an ICBM but to my knowledge, Israel doesn't have ICBM's.

I don't see Obama bombing Iran and like the Bush, Obama will not give the Israelis the green light and the Iraq fly over rights needed to attack Iran.

Weakness will guarantee a war.

A war the globalist elite badly wants to start. They want to start World War III in the Middle East.

All they have are the Jericho series of ballistic missiles, with the Jericho III being the longest ranged.

The Turkey route is out, as Turkey just cut ties with Israel.

Good news is that Iran no longer has an AWACs plane - crashed.

Further, the Russians just canceled Iran's order for S300s and TORs at the behest of the Saudis who are buying them instead.

I don't know about that, BTW. Better not to take any chances, assuming that SA-15 Gauntlets and SA-20B Gargoyles are already in operational service with Iran, and they already are, poised to shoot down intruding Israeli F-15s and F-16s.

Re: Israel doesn't have ICBM's

Check out the Shavit (Hebrew: "comet" - שביט) it is a space launch vehicle produced by Israel to launch small satellites into low earth orbit in 1988. From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shavit

Gadzooks! And that is just the one... we know about!

What good is this bomb when the President doesn’t have the balls to use it?
