If memory serves, the Romans had a shade of purple reserved only for their emperor’s togas.
And (again IIRC), once the capital moved to Constantinople, it was common practice for the emperors to affect purple diadems and other trappings of the Eastern world...including having the common folks bow and scrape in the presence of their emperor.
I’m sure this is all just coincidence, of course. Nothing to do with the current administration, no sir.
