Dyson's Latest: A Fan with No Blades

Dyson's Latest: A Fan with No Blades British inventor James Dyson—creator of the bagless vacuum and air blade hand dryer—has devised a cooling fan that uses 98% less power than air conditioning

For once James Dyson has invented something without cutting-edge technology – a fan without blades. With an eye on the lucrative US market for air conditioning, the creator of the bagless vacuum cleaner is launching his bladeless fan on both sides of the Atlantic today.

Instead of pushing coolness around a room, the loop of the Dyson Air Multiplier "accelerates and amplifies" air, expelling 405 litres a second.

Dyson did not invent the bagless vacuum.

That honor belongs to Filter Queen.

800 cfm if I figure right, that’s enough air for evap cooling; while it won’t eliminate A/C it may allow cheap douchebag bosses to raise the temp setting and give the whiners these units. I don’t think a box fan pushes this much air or at this velocity.

Dyson more correctly put industrial dust collection technology into a home package.

I suspect that it’s not very rich in hydrocarbons, because unlike everyone else’s, mine doesn’t seem to stink. :-)

I noticed that too. To be fair, it may not be truly bladeless, but it may be much more efficient than other fans.

I hear their vacuum cleaner is amazing, but my $100 one (also bagless) has served us great for about ten years now.

On the Dyson drawing board: A car with no wheels, gets 10,000 miles to the gallon, costs 50 million dollars.

Box fan - $25
Dyson air multiplier - $300

I’ll go for the box fan.

But, based on the energy savings, it pays for itself in about 150 years...

I saw a review in either gizmodo.com or engadget.com that this fan (which does have blades, just hidden in the base), doesn’t put out as much air as a conventional fan of the same size and is somewhat noisy. I’ll wait for more reviews before buying one.

I’ll admit I didn’t read the article but a fan is not an air conditioner. If you need to actually lower the air temperature especially if it’s hot out, fan is not going to cut it. A rickshaw is probably more ecological than my car but odds are i’ll be late for work.

Yes, the real innovation is a 100,000 rpm electric motor that drives a turbine compressor. That IS impressive.

“”800 cfm if I figure right, that’s enough air for evap cooling;””

12 inch fan at 1100 rpm does 1200 CFM

http://www.rewci.com/poatvewith.html

Cheap $20 20 inch box fan probably puts out 3-4000 CFM

you can not have engineers in the marketing loop, their love of nifty ideas very rarely translates into sales/profits

That’s the problem. You can hardly buy a 300 hundred dollar fan.

I have one of the vacumns. They are great; but the Rainbow is still number one. Really takes the crap up and out of the air.

So, it’s a GM-UAW product then.
