Public school students throughout California will be celebrating May 22 as a new holiday.
On this day, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, was born. As was Sir Laurence Oliver, arguably the world’s greatest artist.
Richard Wagner, the great composer, was born on May 22 but his music will not be played for the students in commemoration of his works.
Nor will Tommy Franks, the Yankee pitcher, be honored on this day, let alone St. Rita of Cascia, the patron of desperate causes.
May 22 by an act of legislation signed into law yesterday by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is Harvey Milk Day.
Harvey Milk, born on May 22, was the first openly practicing homosexual to be elected to public office. As a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, he was responsible for the passage of stringent laws to protect the rights of the gay community.
On November 27, 1978, Mr. Milk and San Francisco Mayor George Moscone were gunned down and killed by Dan White, another city supervisor who had resigned and wanted his job back.
Mr. Milk is now hailed as “the martyr for gay rights.”
Not everyone is pleased with the new feast day.

They will celebrate the day by shooting milk out of their noses!
Schwarzeneggar should know better than to try to appease the unappeasable.
If I were a kid having to do this I would put a drop of pink food coloring in my milk as protest, or mix in some strawberry Quik.
Parents — all the more reason to homeschool.
Wanna bet a ballot initiative will come up to undo this.

I can remember when California was a really cool place to live. Man did that go bad fast.

Feast for whom and on what? Eeeew.
They should use the day to teach the kids how a POS Psychopath like Dan White used the Twinkee Defense to beat a double murder rap.

I was a kid when this happened. The joke was that Danny White's mother chewed him out because "I sent you to get Milk and Baloney, not Milk and Muscone!"
Another reason to homeschool: Day of Silence. Students are encouraged to silently protest lack of equal rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people in this country. Children should not be used as political pawns by school officials.
Maybe they will use the day to teach the kids about the devastating effects of AIDS when two homo’s have unprotected sex....
No need to do that since they already teach kids how to use condoms.
What about Congressman Leo Ryan who was shot and killed by Jim Jones’ thugs that Milk supported.

Celebrating a man know for his open homosexuality?
How can **anyone** claim that government education is religiously neutral?
How can any Christian pastor say in any way that government schools are OK in any form for a Christian child?
How can any parent with an nanogram of Christian belief allow their child to attend one of these godless temples of depravity?
And...What **specifically** have Christian teachers done to oppose it? What **specifically** is planned? And...Why haven't these so-called Christian teachers been fired yet? If they haven't been fired yet, they are **part** of the problem and are assisting and abetting evil in exchange for a paycheck and gold plated pension. SHAME ON THEM!
Finally, there are schools in this nation where it would be better for a child to receive NO education whatsoever than to ever step foot in one. California government schools now fall into that category!
