Arctic ice cap to disappear in 20-30 years: study

LONDON (AFP) – The Arctic ice cap will disappear completely in summer months within 20 to 30 years, a polar research team said as they presented findings from an expedition led by adventurer Pen Hadow.

It is likely to be largely ice-free during the warmer months within a decade, the experts added.

Veteran polar explorer Hadow and two other Britons went out on the Arctic ice cap for 73 days during the northern spring, taking more than 6,000 measurements and observations of the sea ice.

The raw data they collected from March to May has been analysed, producing some stark predictions about the state of the ice cap.

"The summer ice cover will completely vanish in 20 to 30 years but in less than that it will have considerably retreated," said Professor Peter Wadhams, head of the polar ocean physics group at Britain's prestigious Cambridge University.

"In about 10 years, the Arctic ice will be considered as open sea."

Starting off from northern Canada, Hadow, Martin Hartley and Ann Daniels skied over the ice cap to measure the thickness of the remaining ice, assessing its density and the depth of overlying snow, as well as taking weather and sea temperature readings.

Across their 450-kilometre (290 mile) route, the average thickness of the ice floes was 1.8 metres (six feet), while it was 4.8 metres when incorporating the compressed ridges of ice.

"An average thickness of 1.8 metres is typical of first year ice, which is more vulnerable in the summer. And the multi-year ice is shrinking back more rapidly," said Wadhams.

"It's a concrete example of global change in action.

Liars hiding behind scientific degrees.

Sub-zero degrees.

NEWSFLASH

Scientists say that Earth will be so hot it is uninhabitable in less than 2 days!

Dr. Stan Fulzenblatz of the National Environmental and Fearmongering Organization reports today, "I measured the temperature this morning at 43 degrees Fahrenheit. By 1 PM this afternoon, the temperature was 68 degrees! If this rate of warming continues, the temperature will be over 168 degrees by the day after tomorrow, effectively destroying all life on the planet. We're doomed!" Scientists say that, unless we all reduce our standard of living to prehistoric levels and immediately swear allegiance to Obama, civilization as we know it will be obliterated...

Go to Hawaii to research increased greenhouse gas emissions noted by NOAA monitoring station as primary support for “global warming” theory.

Do not reveal that monitoring station is within 10 miles of an active volcano that has been erupting continuoulsly since the 1980s. Do not mention that eruptive activity has increased substantially for past several years. Do not mention that observation results may well have been corrupted by volcanic gases.

Actually these morons had to abandon their mission and get rescued almost 500 kilometers from the pole. Their high tech ‘radar’ sled broke down in the frigid conditions so they had to resort to drilling old fashioned holes to measure ice thickness. By ANY measure their mission was a FAILURE and the ‘science’ they claim to have gathered is worthless.

It's amazing what computer models can extrapolate when asked to project the future based upon cherry-picked data. In the real world, Arctic sea ice is expanding rapidly and currently extends to a larger area than that experienced in each year since 2005. More importantly, multi-year ice areas are also thickening, as temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere continue a downward trend that began roughly 10 years ago.

A dirty little secret of the warm-mongers is that Arctic measurements begin with a baseline of 1979, which happens to coincide with the start of a short-term warm period that ended around 2000, as governed by a rather normal Pacific Decadal Oscillation, which has now changed phases. At the same time, sunspots have been almost non-existent for more than a year, pointing to reduced solar output and at least the potential for a so-called "solar minimum", past occurrences of which have coincided with little "Ice Ages".

In any event, I am convinced that activities of human beings have nothing to do with it, and any assertion to the contrary has no valid scientific support of which I have become aware. If you are tempted to believe the CO2 hypothesis, just look at the trend lines during the past ten years or so: CO2 concentrations rise as global temperatures drop. That would be a negative correlation. There are, in fact, far more mechanisms at work here than can be described in a small space. Instead: follow the money.

"Veteran polar explorer Hadow and two other Britons..."

The Kyoto Treaty scheme of Great-t Britt-tt-ain is long dead, and carbon tariff laws against imports from east Asia are on the way. ;-)

When I was in Alaska last spring, I saw where there used to be glaciers. We went up Turnagain Arm one afternoon. When my aunt and uncle first moved there 40 years ago, they sent us pictures of the very places I saw in June, it looked like they were in the middle the Arctic. I looked at the same places and saw bare rock. I asked if it was only because it was June and their ‘high summer’ but my uncle said no, it’s been disappearing for years. He worked there for the Dept of the Interior for all those years, he used to go out on the glaciers and into the Interior all the time.

I was in Wasilla! most of the time I was there. Unfortunately, that day was the only sightseeing day I got in 2 weeks. I hope someday to go back and stay with my cousin again and really see Alaska. Oh yeah, I did get to go to Hatcher Pass for a couple of hours. Just beautiful.

Classic case of GIGO: Garbage in, garbage out. The poles have melted before man was here, and will do so afterwards. On average, the Earth has been significantly warmer for longer periods in the past than man has been around.

Yes. Some retiring central bankers have written about doing exactly that (carbon tariffs against third-world imports). ...seems that they don’t care as much for “empire” as they appeared to while working for the plantation bosses.
