Marx gets Vatican thumbs up

Amid the worst recession in generations, Karl Marx, who famously described religion as “the opium of the people”, got a thumbs up from the Vatican overturning a century of Catholic hostility to his creed.

Marx, who predicted that capitalism would be destroyed by its internal contradictions, has joined Galileo, Charles Darwin and Oscar Wilde on a growing list of historical figures to have undergone an unlikely reappraisal by the Roman Catholic Church, The Times newspaper said on Thursday.

The British daily, quoting the Vatican newspaper L’Osservatore Romano, said Marx’s early critiques of capitalism had highlighted the “social alienation” felt by the “large part of humanity” that remained excluded from economic and political decision-making.

Amid signs of recovery in global financial markets, Christian leaders have flayed the capitalist system for displaying a lack of moral values, arguing that ethical debates needs to be given greater prominence.

Georg Sans, a German-born professor of the history of contemporary philosophy at the pontifical Gregorian University, argues that Marx’s work remained especially relevant today as mankind was seeking “a new harmony” between its needs and the natural environment.

The report quoted Prof. Sans as saying that Marx’s theories may help to explain the enduring issue of income inequality within capitalist societies.

we read a graffito in a bathroom stall which quoted a "tag" on the side of an abandoned building in the Bronx which referred to a sermon preached in a new age synagogue which mentioned what a Dominican dying of alcohol poisoning said with his last breath.

LOL. You must be Dan Brown's ghost writer :0)

The above is one of the top five reasons I am no longer Catholic.

It is sad that this social activism is driving people away. I've left during homilies and even changed parishes over it.

Actually the Pope put out a document about 2-3 months ago in support of a one world government and redistribtion of wealth.

Did you read it in German or Latin?

My liberal Catholic inlaws are taught the ‘social gospel’ and they believe Marxism called by another name. Christ say you would know *them* by their fruits. Hey I love these peoples but they are blind to their worship of the nanny socialist gospel state.

But it must be said not only some Catholics adhere to a ‘social gospel’, we elected a ‘compassionate’ conservative President. And I come from a majority of protesters that tooo hold fast to Marxism called by another name. This ‘social gospel’ has gone viral around this globe.

The Bible is filled with what happens to the children when they make other gods before Him.

Anytime a ‘church’ supports the taking of ones income to provide soup kitchens/healthcare for the many are MARISTS.

Divini Redemptoris is the encyclical to which you're referring.

No, the Marists are a Catholic religious order.

MARXISTS are the people who currently run this country, regrettably.

"But Catholicism has tended to liberalism, and liberalism blurs into socialism. And socialism is merely communism by the glassful."

All this tending and blurring does not give an accurate, still less a logical account of things.

Laz, my friend, couldn't we say the Virgin Mary tends toward class-consciousness (Luke 1: "God has filled the hungry with good things, but the rich He has sent away empty"), and class-consciousness tends toward liberalism, and liberalism blurs into communist totalitarianism, therefore the Blessed Virgin Mary was a Maoist"?

Or Laz tends toward radioactivity, radioactivity is associated with nuclear stuff, that makes me think of The China Syndrome, therefore Lazamataz is Jane Fonda?

Love ya, Laz.

Are the other four reasons as groundless and pathetic as this one?

Laz tends toward hittin' it.

Hittin' it can get you diseases.

Diseases cause death.

Laz is become death, destroyer of worlds.

I have yet to hear out of the voice in Rome to these that are destroying our country to stop lying, cheating, and destroying. Marxists wrote the 'social gospel'.

Christ said you will know them by their fruits.

Do you think the Pope ought to be commenting on the economic policies of the U.S. government? I'm pretty sure it's your responsibility and mine to do that, not his.

Look, there are people who claim for the Pope to tell a Catholic politician that they can't support abortion is an interference in American domestic affairs by a foreign power and a "violation of the separation of church and state" [sic].

And you want him to comment on tax policy?

Nice attempt to dodge. On the one hand this guy is 'Christ' in flesh on this earth next he is helpless and powerless. IT is people using the name of this religion (among others) WHO assist and promote the vast illegal invasion, demanding without our representation US to fund their health care and education.... YOU will know them by their fruits. Soup kitchens and ER care paid by me and mine is NOT a 'good' fruit.

NOW what is NOT being blessed in the countries that force their citizenry out to fleece US.

IT sure is not lack of a religion.

Nanny state Pelosi got an audience and yet she is still very much in a 'red' dress action in charge of the peoples house. You think there is a chance a nobody like me would have such opportunity... Oh and God said HE is NOT a respecter of persons.

Actually the Pope put out a document about 2-3 months ago in support of a one world government and redistribution of wealth

That's nothing! Jesus prayed that we all would be one. That's clearly a prayer for a one world government, right? And Jesus was all about redistribution of wealth! What did he tell the rich young man? "You lack one thing. Sell all you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven, and come and follow me." Clearly that's an enthusiastic endorsement of socialism, if not communism.

In other words, context matters.

I'll grant, regretfully, that SOME, even a majority, of US bishops support SOME kind of national health care system.

Your original statement was, with added emphasis:
The leaders of the Catholic Church support One World Government and Nationalized Healthcare.

So EITHER context matters OR (since you did not say, "SOME leaders..." or "A MAJORITY of leaders.... ) every single leader of the Catholic Church supports One World Government and National Healthcare. I am a leader in the Catholic Church, and (facetiousness alert!)(a) since I support neither of those things as they are currently envisioned by socialists you are wrong; and (b) you have just engaged in "mind-reading" which this forum prohibits.

OF COURSE I'm being facetious. I don't think you engaged in mind reading. I am just responding to your statements with the kind of attention to context and detail which anti-Catholics not only deny to the Pope's encyclical but also say it's dishonest for us to expect as one approaches an encyclical on a complex matter.

I'll also eagerly grant that YOU personally don't "own" the mockery of my sourcing your statement to graffiti. But this thread is based on a ridiculous premise and we are now seeing one of the routine anti-Catholic assault techniques, to wit:

(Step 1) Make a thoroughly ridiculous and incendiary charge;
(Step 2) As the pathetically lame and indefensible nature of the initial charge is demolished, do not acknowledge the irresponsibility and dishonesty of the initial charge; but
(Step 3) Change the subject and insist that the new subject become what is discussed.
I won't play. The post which founds this thread is ludicrous and I intend to enjoy and celebrate its stupidity.
