Gingrich: Liberal Republican 'dramatically better' than Democrat [stands by Scozzafava]
OneNewsNow ^ | 2009-10-23

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich is defending his decision to endorse a liberal Republican candidate in the special election for New York's 23rd Congressional District even though she is a Margaret Sanger Award winner and supporter of same-sex "marriage."

New York Republican congressional candidate DeDe Scozzafava not only has the backing of Planned Parenthood and The Daily Kos, but her campaign has also received financial endorsements from the Republican National Committee and Republican leaders such as House Minority Leader John Boehner, House Minority Whip Eric Cantor, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Gingrich recently said Scozzafava's election could be the start of a "new Republican Revolution" that mirrors the "1994 Republican Revolution." On the Andrew Wilkow Show Wednesday, Gingrich explained his endorsement of Scozzafava.

"She's dramatically better than the Democrat. She's not the person I would have nominated [and] she's not the person who fits my values 100 percent, but she is a heck of a lot better than the liberal Democrat," stated Gingrich. "And if you want to have a conservative majority in Washington, part of that majority's going to make you uncomfortable."

She is freefalling at an accelerated rate as the AP poll shows from the ones last week that still showed her ahead. Now the voters in the 23rd are the focus of the nation and they are undoubtedly reconsidering how they are looking at this race.

Exactly.

As resident of upstate NYS I would much prefer that Newt promote DeeDee and her Ilk in his own home state of Georgia. We have enough problems with libs politicians in NYS that we don’t need Newt showing up trying to stuff a few more down our throat.

How about it. One thing I can’t stand is someone who can’t admit they’re wrong. The future of the GOP indeed.

Well, yeah, Newt. Unfortunately for you, the Conservative nominee is dramatically better than both. I’m not even talking about politics. I’m talking about simple competence. I mean, usually, I’m a party guy. Unless the party nominee is a real closet case...like Dede Scozzafava.

Ask that lying bastard Jumping Jim Jeffords what loyalty RINOs have when they can hand the keys to Congress over to their friends, the Democrats.

Newt only cares about Newt. He wants headlines. He has lost any principles he once had.

Go away, Newt.

There's a quote from Monty Python's "Life of Brian" that applies here. Accusing a witch, the John-Cleese character says, "She turned me into a newt." Everyone around looked at him strangely, since he was obviously human. Finally, he mumbles, "Got better."

It is time either for Newt Gingrich to recognize that he's wrong -- that he got better. In the alternative, he should recognize that he has jumped the shark, and no longer offer his comments on the national scene.

This is a perfect illustration of the RINO mentality. The Republican Party just can’t seem to get it through their heads. Conservatives are no longer willing to vote for someone just because ‘they’re not a democrat’. Labels don’t mean #*&% anymore, what we care about is principles and how they behave and will act if elected.

I wonder if Sean will ask him about this?

Yes, right after he asks Rove about his support for amnesty.

One need only consider the passionate replies on this thread to know that Newt has made a major political blunder.

On Laura Ingraham's radio show he defended his endorsement of this candidate on two grounds: First, the candidate is relatively preferable to the Democrat. Even conceding that she is an appalling Rino, there can be no serious argument that she is preferable to a Democrat. He supported that by saying she signed a no tax pledge, is opposed to Cap and Trade etc. The second line of argument is that the selection process is over, Hoffman was twice rejected when he applied for the Republican nomination by two County selection committees. He cannot now be endorsed as a conservative by the Republican hierarchy if one is to have any hope whatsoever of maintaining party discipline and of unseating Nancy Pelosi.

The problem with this is that although it is true it is irrelevant. I have supported Gingrich up and down these threads as the perfect man to be the Republican national Committee Chairman and I have even defended him as presidential timber. But this misstep reveals the Gingrich has slipped away from an understanding of what is happening on the ground in America.

This battle has escalated to be about control of the soul of the Republican Party. If the Republican elites continue to govern the party against the interests of the yeomanry in the middle of the country, the party will splinter asunder and the Democrats will triumph. The tea party endorsement of Hoffman and their opposition to DeDe Scozzafava is grounded in a real and reasonable fear that the Republic will not survive prolonged Democrat governments. Those are the stakes and Newt Gingrich uncharacteristically simply does not understand that.

To respond to the particulars of Gingrich's arguments, it should be noted that this candidate was not selected in the primary process but in smoke-filled rooms. Second, the selection which was done on the local level is so egregious that it was just flat wrong for the Republican congressional committee to affirmatively endorsed the candidate and to subsequently fund her with six figures. Today, not surprisingly, her campaign is disintegrating, and it is morally and financially bankrupt. The RCCC now has the worst of all worlds. For Newt, as a national Republican figure to have compounded the error committed by the RCCC by personally endorsing the candidate, is indefensible.

The Republican National Congressional Committee has received a gift. Yesterday the candidate called the police on a reporter and all the evidence indicates that the candidate was entirely out of bounds. This is an excuse which the Republican National Congressional Committee should seize and use to demand the withdrawal of DeDe Scozzafava.

Newt and the RCCC, especially representative Pete Sessions who bears the ex-officio responsibility for this fiasco, would be well advised to reconsider their position on this matter and move immediately and dramatically to undo the damage they have done. They do not understand that this incident represents an iconic moment which will crystallize the dismay throughout the country with the ruling elites of the Republican Party. They have about 24 hours or they will find that this election has been ripped from from their hands and the party will shortly follow.

Well, that's true, though not at all in the sense that he intends.
