Good darn question! It would seem that a smart company would not want to alienate any potential customers and would "stick to its knitting". Oh well, I guess I'd be wiser to spend $100 on MS software than spend $2500 on a Mac. Too bad I'm choosing which enemy I want to feed the most.

How many apple ‘computers’ at NASA, Lawrence Livermore, Fermilab ? ZERO, ZERO ZERO !!

I'm certain that Huebolt is dead wrong.

"Apple's Federal Customers

Apple's three biggest federal customers are NASA, the Department of Energy, and the National Institutes of Health. At NASA, the biggest customers, as I recall, are NASA Goddard in Maryland and NASA Ames at Moffett Field in California. The Department of Energy list includes all of the major U.S. National Laboratories such as Los Alamos, Lawrence Livermore, Oak Ridge, and some minor ones. These sites typically have thousands of Macs. Of course, they also typically have tens of thousands of PCs.

There are also many other small U.S. research and policy sites that have a boatload of Macs and refresh them periodically: Loyal customers include the RAND corporation in Santa Monica, Mitre in Boston, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado and the FBI. The U.S. Army is also a good customer for Apple. (As I've mentioned before, the USAF and the U.S. Navy are not so much.)"—Source: October 14th, 2009, The Mac Observer.

And here is the official FermiLab support page for the FermiLab Apple Mac IT department.

Apples are, indeed, totally preferred by secretarial staff. I was talking about scientific applications. As an electrical engineer, my fondest memory was of a large flat-bed truck in our parking lot LOADED WITH JUNKED APPLE COMPUTERS of every description. We dumped them as a way of getting rid of having to support two platforms. Only the administrative staff was PO'ed. The engineering staff and tech-support were VERY HAPPY. But everyone loves whatever it is they are used to. Some people like to eat raw squid, I've heard. All opinions are valid, of course. : )
