In a crime that has shocked America up to two dozen passers-by were said to have seen the crime happening and failed to report it as the girl was subjected to an ordeal lasting two-and-a-half hours.
Police Lieutenant Mark Gagan said a "mob mentality" had taken over. He said: "This was a barbaric act. I still cannot get my head around the fact that numerous people either watched, walked away or participated in her assault.
"These suspects are monsters. I don't understand how this many people capable of such atrocious behaviour could be in one place at one time.
Many of the students feel like the people who committed such an awful crime are still among them in class." Five suspects, aged from 16 to 21, have been arrested over the attack at Richmond High School, near San Francisco, over the weekend.
The crime was only discovered when a woman at a nearby party telephoned police to say that two of the suspects were bragging about their role in the attack, which was still going on.

It’s easy to see how this could happen if you paint the scenario as a bunch of hope-and-change supporters who stumbled upon someone who likes Bush and Ann Coulter.
Many ‘brilliant’ Hollywood celebrities would describe such a scene as “not being rape, rape.”
P. Moynihan, a liberal NY Senator from the days when there were still some intellectuals on the left, explained how socialism creates the condition where poverty is an accepted excuse for degeneracy and deviance from civilized behavior. Liberal fascism accepts crime and violence, because they are tools to weaken the people, make them less responsible, and make them more dependent on government. In a stroke of irony, Moynihan was succeeded in office by Hillary Clinton.
It only going to get worse, In the 60’s they remove the Bible and prayer from school. It been a downward slid ever since.
In the late 80’s, it seemed about even blacks and whites, with just about a tenth Hispanic.
Hillary's "village" of the damned.
The multiculturalists have won here like they’ve won in the UK.
DUH! It's a government school. There is no such thing as "wrong."
We, in Richmond, care about cleaning up our town and locking up criminals.
It may be true that our murder rate and viloent crimes are at astronomical levels but it's not as if we didn't care.
Why just last week our hippie Mayor and quisling City Council (except Nat Bates) passed a law banning Styrofoam.
Your figures sure answer the problem for me.
Why is the police officer so surprised?
Hang ‘em all in front of the public in a wild west dirty Harry format, including those who did nothing at the site. There is no need of human rights for terrorists and corrupted people.
Where is Charles Bronson when you need him.
Come to think about it, where were the police? It went on for 2.5 hours?
Again we have to rely on a UK paper to report the horrors going on in our own country. I wish WE had a free press.
They wanted God out of the schools. What they did is what you get. They’re bringing our kids up on NEA thinking: “Obama is the greatest speaker since Julius Caesar”. (See today’s Drudge Report)
The sad thing is, I didn’t doubt it for a second, on the styrofoam. And of course, with one search, here it is:

Yep, those were the days. Newspapers had news...reporters actually interviewed, investigated and reported news.
I also miss the free markets...free speech...all that good old First Amendment stuff .....
“I believe God is deeply saddened by this, just as we are, but for years we’ve been telling God to get out of our schools, to get out of our government and to get out of our lives.
And being the gentleman He is, I believe He has calmly backed out. How can we expect God to give us His blessing and His protection if we demand He leave us alone?” Anne Graham.
“It was Hispanic gang members.”
And so possibly this could have been the initiation for some members - they may actually have scored some “points’ in the process.
And girls may even score points as well.
