Vatican Condemns Hallowe'en As Anti-Christian

The Vatican has condemned Hallowe'en as anti-Christian, saying it is based on a sinister and dangerous "undercurrent of occultism".

By Nick Squires in Rome 30 Oct 2009

The Roman Catholic Church has become alarmed in recent years by the spread of Hallowe'en traditions from the US to other countries around the world. The Holy See has warned that parents should not allow their children to dress up as ghosts and ghouls on Saturday, calling Hallowe'en a pagan celebration of "terror, fear and death".

The Roman Catholic Church has become alarmed in recent years by the spread of Hallowe'en traditions from the US to other countries around the world.

The Vatican issued the warning through its official newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, in an article headlined "Hallowe'en's Dangerous Messages". The paper quoted a liturgical expert, Joan Maria Canals, who said: "Hallowe'en has an undercurrent of occultism and is absolutely anti-Christian."

Parents should "be aware of this and try to direct the meaning of the feast towards wholesomeness and beauty rather than terror, fear and death," said Father Canals, a member of a Spanish commission on church rites. Last year a newspaper controlled by the Italian bishops, Avvenire, called for a boycott of Hallowe'en, calling it a "dangerous celebration of horror and the macabre" which could encourage "pitiless [Satanic] sects without scruples".

Earlier this week the Catholic Church in Spain also condemned the growing popularity of Halloween, saying it threatened to overshadow the Christian festival of All Saints' Day.

The Bishop of Siguenza-Guadalajara, Jose Sanchez, said there was a risk that Halloween could "replace Christian customs like devotion to saints and praying for the dead."

Kind of ironic considering the Roman Catholic church incorporated pagan rituals when it was founded.

I agree with the Church. We didn’t celebrate it with my daughter. I did as a child, and even then, always thought it was an evil day.

True. And then check this:

The Bishop of Siguenza-Guadalajara, Jose Sanchez, said there was a risk that Halloween could “replace Christian customs like devotion to saints and praying for the dead.”

Huh?

The “liturgical expert” they quote is not the voice of the Holy Father - and the L’Osservatore Romano is not the offical mouthpiece of the Magisterium.

The reporter needs to get a clue.

This is in part what led a lot of churches to start providing their own alternative Halloween parties.

A lot of churches will hold some kind of get-together for the kids, costumes may be welcome but usually nothing overtly satanic, nothing that celebrates the grotesquely violent. Just some snacks, some games, and you open and close with a prayer.

As with all aspects of our society, it seems that each year, we try to outdo the past year.

Thus, things like movies, costumes, “Haunted Houses” become more and more horrible and bizarre.

Thirty or so years ago, Haunted Houses were scary, but fun, and usually benefitted some local philanthropic institution.

Nowadays, they are produced by Professionals, and they glorify Fear, Terror and Death.

I’m with the Vatican on this one.

It doesn’t take long to forget history. Back in my Catholic school days, they told us that the eve of All Hallows was the day that mortals fought back against evil spirits/demons. They dressed up in fierce costumes to ‘scare’ away evil spirits.

It was a reminder that there’s a world of unseen, but very real, entities whose objective is to distract us from God.

I love the tradition they have in Iowa, I think they go door to door, and the kid has a joke or a riddle ready. It’s either on Halloween, or the day before. Very cool. Had no idea they did that until I was there on business last year and was at the home of one of my employees. Kids were coming to the door with jokes, and I think it was on the day before.

Can’t exactly remember.

Hallowe'en is not about religion.

Hallowe'en is about free candy.

Bags and bags full of free candy.

When I was growing up I lived on the same block as the Catholic school, church, convent, and rectory. Our first 2 Trick or Treat stops were ALWAYS the convent and rectory..............and we were all at 9 o’clock Mass the next morning.

That does it. I’m dressing as the Pope this year.

That would be consistent with the practice at many Catholic Parishes ... which is to have an All Saints Day celebration ... complete with costumes depicting saints or angels, rather than demons.

Welcome aboard!
