Significant battles sometimes take place in obscure places. Until the last month, New York's 23rd district was known mostly for its cold climate, its history of electing Republicans to the House and its relatively moderate politics.
The GOP has held the district for more than a century. As a result of a surprise announcement on Saturday, Republicans are likely to continue to hold it for the time being. But the developments that put Republicans back in a stronger position to win a special House election on Tuesday will reverberate unpredictably far beyond the boundaries of the 23rd district.
By the time this fight is over, several questions will be front and center heading into the 2010 midterm elections. One is who really controls the Republican Party? Another is whether grassroots anger is now the driving force in politics. A third is whether all this is a wise and winning strategy for Republicans or a great gamble by what has been a beleaguered party.
When President Obama nominated former New York representative John McHugh to be his Army secretary, he created a vacancy in McHugh's upstate district that quickly became the scene of a civil war within the Republican Party.

It’s really not that complicated. Just do as William F. Buckley said and nominate the most conservative candidate who is electable.

Keep up the heat we can only rest a bit when we have control in 2010. Then on to the 2012 elections and victory for our country and for our children!
Isn’t funny how we never heard a sound from the WashPo about the potential dangers for the Dem party if Obama governed from the far left, much further than the Clintons did or would. Nope, crickets.
We are coming for you Washington!
Sarabarracuda and we that love her have spoken, Via la tea parties!
We stand for The Constitution and the rule of law, we honor our oath to protect and defend it!
Newt took the oath, too, did he have his fingers crossed?
Forget about Newt. If FOX puts him on, we will have to protest. If the state run media has him on—well that will speak volumes.
Gingrich, who joined others to support Hoffman Saturday, said candidates running in 2010 and 2012 will have to take notice of what happened. "I don't think you can afford to be dictated to by the hard right because then you can't get to the center," he said. "But you have to recognize that there is a vast conservative movement in this country, it is very well organized and you have to respect its size and strength and recognize that it's a key engine of your success."
Thank you, Newt, for helping to foster the idea that anyone who doesn't agree with you is part of the fringe.
You're done.
I’ve never trusted Newt, I never will. Hats off to Sara Palin on this one. You go girl!

It really makes ya marvel at what the dems put up for office and then get elected... and what does that say about the GoP?
Is it stupidity, ignorance or just a general malaise by their backers to see the dangers in letting scoundrels and scalawags run this gubamint?
It's Halloween, you have just been visited by the double post ghost!
BTW, this is true: this morning, about 10 minutes before the news broke that the R had dropped out of the race, our phone rang. On the other end: Newt's organization trying to sell something. I got the joy of listening to a recording of Newt himself talking about sticking up for conservative values and candidates. When the young lady came back on the line, fully expecting that I would open my checkbook to support all the wonderful work Newt is doing in the name of conservatism, I let her have it. I mentioned NY 23 specifically, told her that Newt was on the wrong side of history, that he was NOT conservative and to remove our number from their list.
She wished me a good day and hung up. Ten minutes later the news broke. Too funny...

Dan Balz purposely refrains from mentioning fiscal responsibility, corruption, ACORN & union backing, loss of personal liberty to big government as issues that motivated Tea Party activists and local NY-23 constituents. Balz frames the revolt against Scozzafava & GOP as her being particularly out of step on social issues.
Yeah Balz, other than social issues everything else about the Federal government is just great. Putz.

Gays and Abortion...
For the largely gay US media, everything is about just those two issues.
This is typical MSM reporting—discusses Scozzafava being “moderate” on social issues, but makes no mention of her abysmal record of supporting higher taxes, increased government spending, and funding for ACORN.
