I think he was just waiting for Dede to step down. From this article posted on the 30th, NY Post Giuliani's silent upstate nod

Rudy Giuliani is publicly sitting out a bitter upstate congressional race -- but one of his political advisers will be helping the Conservative Party candidate, in a move seen as a tacit nod, The Post has learned.

Adviser Jake Menges, who would not get involved if Giuliani opposed the move, will help 23rd Congressional District hopeful Doug Hoffman get out the vote against Republican Dede Scozzafava, Hoffman spokesman Rob Ryan confirmed.

Giuliani has faced intense lobbying from the National Republican Congressional Committee -- helmed by Rudy booster Rep. Pete Sessions -- to help Scozzafava, as national Democrats salivate over the chances of their candidate, Bill Owens.

Scozzafava, an Assemblywoman, has seen her candidacy crater to third place in polls, and many GOPers are staying away, citing her past backing from the left-tilting Working Families Party.

Former Gov. George Pataki, who has a home in the district and is considering a US Senate run, last night became the first top local GOPer to break with the party, giving Hoffman a full-throated endorsement.

If somebody needs Rudy’s, or anyone else’s seal of approval 48hrs ahead of an election to help them pick a candidate, I’d rather they just stayed away from voting at all......ever.

It’s a scam. Giuliani has been highlighted as a Republican leader...given high-profile speaking slots that the GOP wouldn’t give to conservatives.

When you make him out to be a party leader, you’re endorsing his politics...politics that are identical to Scozzafava’s in every way that matters.

Giuliani is a lot more liberal than I'd like, but he's not a RINO. He's a liberal republican.

RINO's are backstabbing jerks like DeDe who takes $900,000 of the NRCC's money and endorses the democrap when her polls tank.

Giuliani has been highlighted as a Republican leader...

He shouldn't be ...

I stand by my comments - he makes a useful follower and ally, but not a leader.

Not me. I’m not an ally of anyone who supports killing babies, destroying the institution of marriage, and gutting the Constitution of the United States. Doesn’t matter what letter is by their name.

In a perfect world, edpc, everyone would be up to speed, understand all the ramifications of every vote, and vote the right way every time.

But we don't live in a perfect world, and you can bet your bottom dollar that Rudy's endorsement will have a positive influence on Hoffman's victory.

As I said once before, if you're interested in Hoffman's winning the election, this is a good thing.

If you're not, I'm not sure there's any more to be discussed.

I know I will be flamed, and I know Rudy isn’t a strong conservative, but I like him and wonder if he had run a stong campaign if he might have beaten the POS we have in there now. I would take Clinton back at this point. BHO is a pretender living the high life. He’s lazy, let’s everyone else do his work while he parties and campaigns on our dime. Despicable!

The Dem ads are linking Hoffman to Bush. When will waving the bloody bush falg get old with the Dems

With Camp Drum in that district, that could backfire.

I think you know that I'm as pro-life as anyone on this board, EV, but let me ask this hypothetical question of you....

Would you rather have Giuliani's endorsement and get a pro-life Congressman, or not have it and elect a pro-abortion Congressman?

Because that may well be the situation as it will turn out, and I would sure hate to have a strong pro-life advocate on the wrong side of the question.

I agree with your comments on both Rudy and Dede.

It seems Dede's own campaign spokesman is even endorsing Hoffman now. From CENTRAL NY REAL-TIME NEWS: Republican Dede Scozzafava urges friends to vote for Democrat Bill Owens after exiting NY-23 House race

............Earlier Sunday, the Jefferson County Republican Party announced it would back Hoffman in Tuesday's election.

Matt Burns, who was Scozzafava's campaign spokesman until she suspended her campaign, said he thought Scozzafava was making a mistake in supporting Owens.

"Dede is entitled to her own opinion, as is everyone, but I obviously disagree with her decision. I am supporting Doug Hoffman, because denying Nancy Pelosi another foot soldier is vital to restoring fiscal responsibility and common sense in Washington," Burns said in an e-mail.

A number of prominent Democrats and White House officials reached out to Scozzafava in the past 24 hours, asking her to endorse Owens.

U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., had several phone conversations with Scozzafava, an aide confirmed Sunday. Schumer also asked White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel to help lobby Scozzafava for her support.
.................

No flame from me. Rudy is one of the good guys no matter what you read here. I’d give my right arm to have him as POTUS right now as opposed to the scum we have. Our soldiers would have already been in Afghanistan and we sure as heck wouldn’t be worrying about socialism.

Rudy had one of his people up helping Hoffman days ago.

Rudy had back bone helping New York City through the IslamOfascist attack on it and the near 3,000 killed by the enemy.
At least he supports taking it to the enemy who declared war on America rather than sit in a bunker like the hero of some on FR

I don’t make common cause with folks who support the daily killing of thousands of babies, any more than I would politically associate myself with Hitler or Stalin. In this country they’re free to vote for or endorse whomever they want, but I’m not going to associate with them, endorse anything they’re doing, or recognize them as the leader of anything.

So you truly believe that those of us who are happy that Rudy endorsed Hoffman so that Hoffman will have a better chance of getting into Congress are doing the equivalent thing as politically associating ourselves with Hitler or Stalin?

Oooooo KAy.........

The perfect world argument is about as weak as it gets. Hoffman will win in spite of Rudy's 11th hour endorsement, not because of it.

My interest here deals less with Hoffman winning. I believe he will. I'm more concerned with Rudy's Johnny-come-lately arrival to the aid of someone who seems to be a true conservative.

If he tries to parlay this support into another national run down the road, I've got a problem with it. He's not a true conservative and shouldn't waste our time masquerading as one.

If he wants to be NYC mayor or NY gov, fine by me. If a future President wants to make him AG, I probably wouldn't object. I wouldn't want him on the SC and I definitely wouldn't want him as the nominee for Prez. We've seen that movie.

Even so, Rudy Guiliani would have been a better President than the current resident.

That is the truth. He doesn't pander or back pedal. And, he understands politics.

You’re missing the forest for the trees. While the whole thing burns down around your ears.

It’s Leftists like Giuliani that have been pushed forward by your party now for a number of years. They’ve been coddled, pandered to, and featured at events and conventions. They’ve been presented as your superstars.

Like it or not, they are now your party. And they’re why you’re in the situation you’re in now in NY-23.

God is going to take your party away from you if you don’t knock it off.

NY-23 is just a prelude. Y’all managed to go from being the obvious first party in that district - only Republicans have held it since the 1870s - to third-party status, to being no party to the election now at all. In the short space of a couple of weeks the GOP has reached the vanishing point.
