As many people know by now, or are waking up to this morning, yesterday 39-year-old Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, went on a shooting spree at the Fort Hood Army post in Texas killing 13 and injuring at least 30. While Hasan is in critical condition and unconscious, some are speculating that the motive for the shooting was concern over his upcoming deployment to Afghanistan.

You need to upgrade from that ol' wheel gun friend.

I counted 7 shots.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a 1911.

;-)

Sorry. Worked the midnight shift, got home, had some coffee and screwed up.

By the way, real men carry 1911s. Got three to choose from every time I leave the house.

"stupid"

Especially considering what just happened. Since 9/11 there's been talk at all levels about terrorist attacks on America. Didn't the big cheeses think that military installations could also be the targets of terrorist attacks. What if it had been more than just one armed lunatic? What if it had been a five, ten or more armed with automatic weapons? They could have taken out a lot more than what Hasan did with just two handguns. What kind of military base defense system do the Israelis have? The military better rethink their rules about arming soldiers while on the base.

"Israel"

Thank you for that bit of info. I had read somewhere where Israeli soldiers carry their weapons at all times, but I couldn't place it.

I have to get a 1911, and have been leaning toward a basic Rock Island model.

I have a bunch of firearms, but somehow managed to never get a 1911, even though I really like them.

My latest toy is a Romanian AK-47 "Draco" pistol. I've been on an AK-47 kick lately.

While all these posts are intelligent, this’n’s the first ‘worthwhile’ suggestion! No muslim in the army should be armed (or have access to arms), until a) Obama’s gone or b) the WOT is over. Wolf/Little Red Riding Hood common sense, nothing personal!

How does “Stop or I’ll shoot” work for you.

the biggest problem here is the ‘loose lips’ syndrome...was this jihad Major just a ‘test firing’? Methinks, the brass gonna have to up the ante now that the press has loosed its pink lips.

“What is the reason for this and when did this start?”

I believe it started during or right after WWII, but I do not know the exact history. In context, it has all been part of the left’s desire to make the carrying of weapons verboten outside of very limited contexts. Many countries in the world do not even allow the police to take weapons home with them.

Perhaps someone else can say just when it started. Maybe it was right after the Civil war. I think, for a long time, no one questioned the right of officers to be armed anytime and nearly anywhere, but after WWII, that was gone. A great many in the elite in this country love the British model and wish for us to emulate them.
