Fort Hood Shooting Suspect Awake, Talking

FORT HOOD, Texas – A U.S. Army hospital spokesman said the man suspected in a deadly shooting spree at Fort Hood is conscious and able to talk.

Dewey Mitchell, a spokesman at Brooke Army Medical Center, said Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan remains in stable condition. Mr. Mitchell said Maj. Hasan has been awake and able to talk since he was taken off a ventilator Saturday.

Maj. Hasan is at Brooke Medical Center in San Antonio, about 150 miles southwest of Fort Hood.

Authorities say the 39-year-old Maj. Hasan opened fire at a processing center Thursday at Fort Hood, the country's largest military installation. Thirteen people were killed and 30 were wounded.

The rampage ended when civilian police shot Maj. Hasan.

Army officials said their investigators increasingly believe that Maj. Hasan was the lone gunman in the carnage. "Right now we're operating on the belief that he acted alone and had no help," said a military official familiar with the Army Criminal Investigation Division probe.

To help settle the question more definitively, the official said, military investigators were trying to determine where Maj. Hasan had purchased his handguns and the large quantity of ammunition used in the attack.

At least one weapon, an expensive semiautomatic handgun, came from gun store Guns Galore in Killeen, where the Army base is located, law-enforcement officials said. A person who answered the phone at the store Friday said it was cooperating with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and had been asked by law-enforcement officials not to comment.

Military and civilian law-enforcement authorities are examining Maj. Hasan's phone and computer records to see if he had communicated with any extremist elements in the days before the attack, according to a military official familiar with the matter.

The first general officer in Nidal’s chain of command has convening authority, no one else. That means some two-star in the medical command likely has the ball.

And, you mean literally HAS THE BALLS?

DallasMike asks a good question, too -- how did this guy get past the NICS check? Probably because up to the time he went jihad, he didn't have any negatory behaviors on file that would have flagged him. Particulary a US Army officer.

So back to your original question, Carry_Okie -- how did they trace this? They would have the make/model/ser#, so...

1) Maybe that NICS data isn't getting destroyed within 24 hours like the law requires.

2) Maybe the FBI sent agents out to every gun shop in the area, looked through the 4473 forms, and got lucky.

3) Something I haven't thought of yet.

Not being paranoid, but my bet's on horse #1.

Why couldn’t he be treated by a dangerously and totally incompetent affirmative action doctor?

The weapon is recovered, and they contact FN who provides the distributor to which it was shipped, the distributor provides the dealer, and the dealer checks through their bound book.

Let’s hope when they change the bandages that they rip that tape off so that it hurts big time..same with taking out the surgery staples and insert IVs so it really smarts...hope he gets bed sores too.

"The amazing thing to me is that..A. He found so much ammo for it. B. He was able to afford it."

A single Major living in a dumpy apartment has a LOT of discretionary income. When I was a married Captain, my ex wife and I deliberately looked for a place that was well below my basic allowance for quarters, and I had no problem plunking down cash for a lot of little luxuries including a .50AE Desert Eagle which listed at right around $1K at the time + plenty of ammo, which even back then was about $1.05 x round.

I know the 5.7 is still a bit more obscure, but a single O-4 that finds a cheap apartment off post has some $$ to do with as he pleases.

how did this guy get past the NICS check?

from one article i read, FBI called the local shop, asked them to pull the yellow sheet, matched the gun, found it was purchased by someone with a different name.

I would not bet against it.. I bet that will be kept very quiet though....
Someone sent me a video in which there are more than one clip of 0bama and the first part it seems he is addressing a Muslim group and he talks all about having seen Islam in three different countries...and admits he is “ one of them” and then there is another during the campaign where he is interviewed and he makes a remark to the effect that McCain has not made mention of “ my Muslim faith”...in the unconscious moment the truth was revealed twice.

Maybe I should have said “under the hoof”? I wish Zero and Michelle couldn’t attend the ceremony tomorrow. They won’t share tears w/the families. We will hear pc rhetoric. These heroes were willing to give their lives for us, but their chain of command protected their own “cover your rear” careers. They were afraid of the PC BS to speak against the enemy among them. Ah..but they will read verses from the Bible, that’s not pc.

I like your idea (it’s very practical)

Apparently, so did great US leaders like “Black Jack “ Pershing.

The same thought crossed my mind after the make model and place of purchase was announced so quickly.

In my ignorance I thought the NICS data was stored for six months. Thanks for educating me.

The FBI tipped their hand and used the NISC system !

I too am betting on horse #1.

Only fair to warn you I only bet on sure things and fixed horse races.

Yes there is! Don’t be PC anymore and don’t give a shit if folks are bothered by your non-PC! The day has come when a Spade needs to be called a spade! Tell all your friends, co-workers and family!

Maybe we’ll get lucky and some reporter will ask him who he voted for in the 2008 presidential election.
