A cluster of socially conservative Houstonians is planning a campaign to discourage voters from choosing City Controller Annise Parker in the December mayoral runoff because she is a lesbian, according to multiple ministers and conservatives involved in the effort. The group is motivated by concerns about a gay takeover of City Hall, given that two other candidates in the five remaining City Council races are also openly gay, as well as national interest driven by the possibility that Houston could become the first major U.S. city to elect an openly gay woman

Silly.
Another primary concern is that Parker or other elected officials would seek to overturn a 2001 city charter amendment that prohibits the city from providing benefits to the domestic partners of gay and lesbian employees.
Go after her for THIS kind of thing, not because of what she does in her private life.

This is going to be a good race to watch, liberal lesbian against an African American liberal to be mayor of the biggest city in Texas.
And my guess is that Parker will win the race with the support of white liberals inside the Loop, suburban whites who supported her in past elections.
For Locke to be able to win, he will have to use the playbook of New Orleans Mayor, Ray Nagin who won by building a coalition between African Americans and White Conservatives.

If she’s the one who made her private life public, it’s fair game and needs to be challenged.

If shes the one who made her private life public, its fair game and needs to be challenged. If not hiding her lesbianism means "making her private life public," that logic is no better than that of Letterman and the other asses who've attacked Palin's family.

Why?
1) Homosexuality is a charactre flaw.
2) The public has a right to know if its elected officials are going to be pushing off the gay agenda onto them, which practically all gay elected officials - especially Democrats - have a propensity to do.

I don't give a damn what someone does in the bedroom with a consenting adult as long as they do right by the job they're elected to do.
As if straight people don't have character flaws?

The problem is that most
liberal homosexual elected officials
don't do the job they were elected to do. They use their office as a springboard for advancing the particular agenda of the 2% who share their sexual orientation. The problem is that they
don't keep it in the bedroom. And when they don't do that, it BECOMES my and everybody else's business.
Everybody has charactre flaws. However, most people's charactre flaws don't induce them to advance a 2%er agenda over the good and the wants of the rest of the electorate.

I agree with you completely on the part about bringing the agenda into the office. But I personally know some gay people who not only don't do that, but are actual, not Log Cabin, Republicans and loathe Obama.
We don't have to go back and forth on this, we see it differently, but we can agree that they need to keep their gay marriage and all that crap out.

Yes, there is no connection between female homosexuality and job performance, particularly where the Rule of Law is involved. How can we doubt that after Attorney General Janet Reno’s performance in office? s/

Question: would you elect a known pedophile to public office? As long as they have sex with children only in the privacy of their own bedroom?

Mrs. Tick was born there, and I do a lot of business there. I always thought of Houston as quite conservative — overall, perhaps, the MOST conservative large city in Texas.
Problem is, there is Houston proper, and lots of little incorporated areas in and around Houston, in the “Houston SMSA”. So maybe between Katrina refugees, the large minority ‘Rat population, and who knows what else, Houston proper has gone over to the dark side.
But the major industry is oil & gas, and those folks are pretty conservative as a group.
Just my 2c
