Thank You so much for doing this azkathy and thank everyone else as well.
LOL
We ALL need to support the CA farmers, I believe they supply approximately 25% of our food source. (I may be wrong on that percentage but no time to look it up now.)
No need to thank me, just invite everyone you know from AZ to attend! :)
The water issues should be more open to the voters, and if they reject a Peripheral Canal initiative like they did in 1982, so be it.
Unfortunately, the more complex the technical issues become, the more power is taken away from citizens by the makers of regulations, who get to define what a species and a habitat are, and judges who uphold the definitions.

I nominate this for Post of the Day.
No, you canna have no tea party!! The Gila trout needs alla the water you waste on tea!

No. Urban fishermen would scream.
Are they adding turbidity to the water so that the smelt can hide from the bass?
No, the opposite. Urbanites want a "clean" river.
Are they shifting cities to composting toilets so that the outfall from treatment plants doesn't kill them?
No, the opposite. Urbanites don't want to deal with composting toilets.
Are they getting rid of the exotic smelt that is cross-breeding and hybridizing them?
Probably not possible. Urbanites love cheap imported goods and won't do a damned thing about controlling such introductions.
See a pattern?
Peter needs a moyel.
Agri-chemicals from the farm field.
And don't forget residential run off. Harry homeowner buys a lot of Round-Up herbicide from Walmart to control the weeds while Chem-lawn applies reaidential product even if rain is imminent.
Not to mention those individuals who pee while swimming in the river or bay.
And don’t forget Bubba’s Body Shop. It costs a lot of money to have scrap paint hauled off. Its cheaper to dump it in that ravine behind the shop.
Quite deliberately. When the Central Valley was principally farms the smelt were doing fine. The reason is nutrient provided the algal turbidity and food the smelt need.
But don't let the meme get in your way.

To my knowledge, glyphosate is completely benign as regards fish. There are questions about the surfactants in RoundUp, but there are plentiful natural analogues that are just as powerful, particularly on Pseudomonas bacteria.
But don't let the meme get in your way when it comes to a power grab.

This one is downright hilarious. A river easily consumes that much nitrate, but if you get your way, it will have insufficient concentrations to support smolts at all. That way, the bureaucrats can remain in power forever!
Been there, done that.
