NEW YORK (Reuters Health) – Children who don't show normal fear responses to loud, unpleasant sounds at the age of 3 may be more likely to commit crimes as adults, according to a new study.
Yu Gao and colleagues in the United States and the United Kingdom compared results from a study of almost 1,800 children born in 1969 and 1970 on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius to criminal records of group members 20 years later.
At age 3, the children were tested to gauge their level of "fear conditioning," or fear of consequences. The idea is that children who associate unpleasant sounds or other unpleasant experiences with fear will be less likely to commit antisocial acts because they will link such experiences with punishments for those acts.
Researchers tested the 3-year-olds' responses to unpleasant noises using a lie detector. When they looked at any criminal records among the participants 20 years later, 137 of them (131 male, 6 female) had at least one criminal conviction.
Compared to almost 300 participants with no criminal records, those 137 participants had a much lower response to the noises at the age of 3.
The findings could link previous studies suggesting that psychopaths and children with behavioral problems at the age of 11 have similar abnormalities in a part of the brain called the amygdala. That structure is largely responsible for directing fear of consequences.
Because this study controlled for social factors such as parents' education, number of parents in the home, socioeconomic status, and family size, biology is the likely reason for the "blunted emotions" registered in some of the 3 year olds, study co-author, Dr. Adrian Raine of the University of York in England, told Reuters Health in a telephone interview.

What I would look for the most is whether or not the child is showing signs of being desensitized. It’s not always the kids who don’t show fear, some kids are stoics by their nature, for whatever reason. It’s the ones that seem addicted to getting a ‘fix.’

You cannot get a government education grant if you check the block that says do you have common sense. If you answer you have 5 dimes and six pennies, you are in.
Children who aren’t nurtured tend to be more withdrawn and therefore might respond with less emotion. This is a parental issue, not because a child is genetically predisposed to be a criminal. I’ve seen infants from abusive homes. It is very sad.
There is some other background to explain why this is in error.
Normal human input and output tends to cluster around one of four types. This can be observed in adults.
The “Emotional” cluster of people deal with things happening around them on emotional terms and emotional opinions. Say, if someone drops a jar and it breaks on the ground behind them unexpectedly, they get one or more emotional interpretations of the event. Fear, guilt, anger, sadness, happiness, you name it.
The “Intellectual” cluster of people, in the same situation, do not act or interpret with emotion, but “Mr. Spock” like detachment, instead trying to intellectually examine the event to determine what has happened. There are far fewer of them than emotional people.
The “Physical” cluster of people are very athletically oriented, and their input and output are actions, not thoughts or feelings. Importantly, because they communicate with others with physical contact, instead of talking about their thoughts or feelings, emotional and intellectual people do not like them very much. Grabbing, hugging, pinching, whatever. Even though they can speak, this is how they communicate. The end result is that most of them feel like they live in a foreign country, where few speak their language.
And they also get put in prison a lot. However, if you drop a jar behind them, they are likely to catch it before it can hit the floor.
The fourth cluster of people are most commonly autistic. They deal with the world in an “Instinctual” manner, which as those who work with them a lot will say, is a form of communication, just difficult to read for most people.
So expecting a low noise to emotionally upset an infant, while it will identify the majority of emotional people, will miss the others. And because physically oriented people tend to get in trouble with the law in our society, it will seem to be linked with future criminal behavior.
Well, sort of. But it can also be linked with good athletes.
“Spare the rod, spoil the child”
The desire of insecure parents to be “best friends” with their kids damns them to a life without an understanding of consequences and authority.
Well, I have observed some kids during my work with Parents As Teachers and I can tell you that I have seen a child that at age 3 I could already see he had sociopathic tendencies. In one hour long visit, this kid threw a blanket on top of his one year old sister and started punching her, a few minutes later he grabbed a wiffle ball bat and started attacking his mom’s dogs and his little sister. The whole time mom is sitting there letting this go on while I am trying to help the mom set boundaries and effective discipline, and not do anything to get myself fired. A few days later, there was a “suspicious” fire set in a wooded area behind this family’s house.
I’m sure we will be watching this kid on the news in a few years for being a serial killer.
One of my kids was like that. Spanked the crap out of him.

I don't doubt it. This is hardly the only study to link early life characteristics to crime.
